Registered Nurse (RN) Job Description Job Summary The Registered Nurse (RN) delivers high-quality, patient-focused care by applying evidence-based practices, clinical expertise, and compassionate care in an acute care environment. The RN works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, advocates for patient needs, and adheres to professional standards to support optimal health outcomes. Job Description Major Responsibilities: Participate in unit councils, professional governance, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance care processes and implement evidence-based practices. Apply the nursing process to assess, plan, diagnose, implement, and evaluate nursing care, involving patients and families throughout the care continuum. Monitor patient conditions, modify care plans as needed, coordinate resources, and collaborate with the care team to influence outcomes. Promote and maintain a culture of safety. Continuously assess patient, team, and unit outcomes and take appropriate actions. Administer medications, treatments, and therapies safely in accordance with clinical protocols and procedures. Exhibit effective communication, provide feedback, resolve conflicts, encourage team collaboration, and delegate appropriately. Engage in professional development, complete required education, and maintain certifications. Adhere to the ANA Code of Ethics, practice ethical decision-making, respect interdisciplinary roles, and contribute to integrated, unbiased patient care. Delegate tasks appropriately to Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and unlicensed assistive personnel (e.g., nurse aides, credentialed medical assistants). Maintain accurate and timely electronic health record (EHR) documentation. Be prepared to float to other units, departments, care areas, or facilities within the service area as needed to meet patient care demands. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care, understanding growth and development principles across the lifespan, and assess and interpret patient data to meet age-specific needs as outlined in departmental policies and procedures. Minimum Job Requirements Education Graduate of a Board of Nursing-approved nursing education program. Certification / Registration / License Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Additional education, training, certifications, or experience may be required depending on specialty. Active Registered Nurse (RN) license, either multi-state compact or single-state, with privileges to practice in the state(s) where nursing services are provided. Note: Nurses practicing via telehealth, telenursing, or virtual modalities must hold licensure or privileges to practice in the state(s) where patients are located and comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards of practice. Experience Typically requires at least one year of clinical nursing experience. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking skills. Effective time management, prioritization, and problem-solving abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to perform well in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Proficiency with computer functions such as email, electronic records, and digital platforms across clinical and administrative departments. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently throughout the workday. Capable of lifting and supporting up to 35 pounds when handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. Able to push/pull with 30 pounds of force and perform sliding transfers of up to 150 pounds with assistance. Possess functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch, including fine hand manipulation skills for procedures such as IV insertion. Operate foot pedals on carts or machines as required. Perform physical safety interventions, including patient restraint and verbal de-escalation, when necessary. May be exposed to chemical and hazardous waste, blood and body fluids, and communicable diseases; appropriate protective clothing and equipment must be used. Must respond promptly to changes in patient or unit conditions. Physical abilities testing may be required. Additional department-specific physical requirements may be identified by nurse leadership for unique responsibilities.
