Location: Los Alamos, NM (100% Onsite) Compensation: $39-$44/hr
Schedule: 4/10s Mon-Thu or 5/8s (40 hrs/week) Duration: Short-term contract through 09/30/2026
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship Required Clearance: No clearance required
IMPACT
The LANL Research Library is seeking an experienced Information Research Specialist 2 to support a collection logistics, indexing, and inventory project at one of the nation's premier scientific research institutions. At this level, you are the fully qualified, career-oriented professional - resolving complex research and records management challenges independently, contributing to organizational goals, and applying sound judgment to a wide range of information retrieval and archive management activities.
This role goes beyond data entry. You will manage special records and archive collections, support retrieval of classified and legacy technical reports, develop specialized information retrieval strategies, and may assist the FOIA coordinator in responding to information release requests. No clearance is required to apply, making this a strong opportunity for candidates with deep library, records management, or technical information backgrounds who want to contribute to a nationally significant research mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Manage special records or archive collections and perform technical information research and retrieval from a wide variety of collections to meet the information needs of Laboratory staff and external customers
- Support retrieval and distribution of significant quantities of legacy and current classified records, archives, and technical reports
- Develop and maintain specialized information retrieval strategies, including interactions with professional networks and key contacts
- Track and coordinate boxes of documents prepared for offsite storage; create and maintain spreadsheets of box barcodes and inventory data
- Prepare boxes and materials for shipment, storage, or other approved handling; support logistics planning for high-volume shipping
- Upload box and inventory data into online systems; communicate with offsite storage vendors, LANL groups, and local project teams
- Index reports onsite, including reports that may contain Controlled Unclassified Information
- Review indexed records received from an outsourced indexing vendor for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
- Capture metrics to meet objectives of the archives or records management program; participate in special projects through full project lifecycle
- Assist in development of organizational procedures; participate in inventories and audits
- Provide support to the FOIA coordinator, responding to Freedom of Information Act or other information release requests
- Help review and coordinate work completed by student workers or project assistants
- Distribute information to customers following well-established procedures
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Full working knowledge of technical information research with understanding of related fields
- Demonstrated ability to resolve a wide range of complex information research and records management issues independently
- Strong attention to detail and accurate data entry experience
- Ability to follow detailed procedures and protocols, including those for controlled or sensitive information
- Good written and verbal communication skills; experience working with professional networks and external contacts
- Experience using spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel or similar tools
- Ability to lift boxes up to 25 pounds frequently
DESIRED SKILLS
- Experience with indexing, metadata entry, inventory tracking, or quality control in a library or records management environment
- Background in library services, records management, archives, logistics, or technical information
- Experience with FOIA or other information release request processes
- Familiarity with classified or controlled unclassified information handling procedures
- Experience developing organizational procedures or contributing to program goals and objectives
- Knowledge of information retrieval systems and archive management best practices
