Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Surgical Acute - Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active Illinois License required Certifications: BLS required Must-Have: - Post-operative care experience - Critical thinking skills - Good bedside manner - Team player Description: The Surgical Acute unit has 63 beds, including private and observation beds. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5 patients per RN during days and 5-6 patients per RN at night, with the potential for higher ratios when necessary. Common patient types include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, and overflow medical patients. The unit handles dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, and TPN. Nurses do not titrate drips; however, they may manage Heparin and other medications. Each shift has a charge nurse and a house supervisor available 24/7. Patient care technicians assist with vital signs, activities of daily living, and patient mobility with varying patient ratios. Respiratory therapists manage nebs, while nurses handle inhalers and CPAP placement. Telemetry techs are present, and bedside nurses are not required to read strips from the monitors. Shifts are scheduled from 0700–1930 for days and 1930–0730 for nights. Nurses will be expected to work every other weekend. Holiday coverage will be rotated every other holiday. Traveling nurses will be floated first, primarily within units of comparable experience. Scrub colors are flexible; any color is acceptable for work attire. Unit-specific orientation will involve direct mentorship and professional orientation activities.
