Surgical Technologist 1The Surgical Technologist 1 functions in the inter-operative phase of patient care to expedite surgical procedures. This role operates under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Surgical Technologist assists the surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation to ensure a safe operating room environment. They ensure that required equipment is available and functioning properly. The Surgical Technologist discusses any special needs with the surgeon before surgery and scrubs in adequately for proper preparation of instruments. They prepare the operative site by aseptically cleaning and clipping the patient as needed. They maintain instrument tables in an organized manner to avoid damage and ensure accurate instrument counts. The Surgical Technologist identifies damaged or incomplete trays, rectifies discrepancies, or contacts appropriate personnel to avoid delays or injury. They set up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules. The Surgical Technologist arranges sterile setups of instrument tables, supplies, and equipment as required for specific procedures. They ensure the proper functioning of surgical instruments and supplies during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist performs counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items according to established policies. They anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team during procedures. This role involves passing sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants, holding retractor devices, and responding to the surgical team's needs. The Surgical Technologist assists with draping and positioning the patient. They receive surgical specimens following protocol and verify the source before passing specimens off the sterile field. They assist with placing surgical dressings on the operative site after the procedure. The Surgical Technologist disassembles surgical instrumentation at the procedure's end and appropriately disposes of sharps, fluids, and waste. They prepare soiled instrumentation for transport to the decontamination area. This role ensures the cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments and supplies for distribution. The Surgical Technologist cleans the operating room after each case and returns equipment to storage areas. They follow infection control policies and guidelines, ensuring a safe work environment for all. The Surgical Technologist ensures proper knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use. Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are necessary for interaction with surgical and central sterile processing team members. There may be occasional exposure to chemical or radiation hazards. Successful completion of an accredited surgical technologist program is preferred. Knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards is essential. Knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures is important for this role.
