Summary Under general supervision, performs semiskilled work of more than routine nature in maintaining buildings, grounds, and equipment, or hauling maintenance materials. Positions in this class require skill in the use of hand tools and the more simple power tools, or in the operation of automotive equipment. Employees serving as helpers in the various building trades are also assigned to this class. Key Responsibilities Maintain buildings, grounds, and equipment. Operate hand tools, power tools, and automotive equipment. Assist in building trades and may act as work leader for a small team. Perform heavy labor such as lifting and moving objects up to 100 lbs. Follow written and oral instructions and document work orders. Operate heavy equipment including backhoes, trenchers, pressure washers, farm tractors, trucks over 26,000 lbs, and asphalt machines. Respond to emergency calls and work in adverse weather. Physical Demands Ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs. and perform strenuous labor. Qualifications High School or GED diploma. Valid Maryland Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for vehicles over 26,000 lbs. Completion of MCPS General Maintenance Worker written and hands‑on skill tests. OSHA/MOSH, asbestos, backhoe, trenching, and other equipment training. Experience in building, grounds, and equipment maintenance. Strong communication and human‑relations skills. Ability to learn a wide variety of maintenance tasks. Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
