LOCATION OF POSITION

Land and Materials Administration Oil Control Program Remediation Division 1800 Washington Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21230 Main Purpose of Job The Geologist I provides frontline review, evaluation, and management for conditions of known or suspected oil contamination in the Eastern Region of the Oil Control Program’s (OCP) Remediation Division. The Division implements the mandate of Environment Article 4-401, et seq as it applies to regulated petroleum substances by overseeing, managing, and directing the technical work of tank owners, operators, and environmental contractors. The Division is responsible for the remediation of petroleum releases throughout the state. The incumbent in the position will review and evaluate conditions of known or suspected oil contamination to determine the extent, level and type of investigation and remediation needed and when site investigation and remediation has been completed. The incumbent will also evaluate the threat or risk to public health and the environment, offer technical expertise and ensure the enforcement of applicable statutes, regulations, permits, and policies pertinent to OCP. The incumbent will perform job functions within the State of Maryland, primarily in the Eastern Region of OCP’s Remediation Division. Emergencies, vacancies, and caseload may require performance of job duties in other areas of the State. The Working Conditions Of This Position May Involve Exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. Site visits and the collection of environmental samples entail a variety of exposure to field conditions that can be uncomfortable and unpleasant. Exposure to hazardous conditions, which may result in injury. The employee is required to visit and inspect areas containing chemical and physical hazards at a variety of contaminated or potentially contaminated sites Special physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more The employee may be required to lift heavy manhole covers, sampling equipment and supplies, climb ladders, and wear respiratory protection while performing work activities. Use of protective equipment such as hard-hat, safety shoes, googles, gloves, mask, etc. The incumbent in this position will be required to drive a State vehicle. If you maintain an out-of-state driving license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record for the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment. Individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record in order to drive a State vehicle. Minimum Qualifications Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science. Experience: None. Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for- year basis for the required education. Desired Or Preferred Qualifications Please note that your answers to the supplemental questionnaire must correspond to the information provided on your application to receive credit. It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following: Possession of a degree in Geology, science related background or college coursework including Hydrogeology, hydrology, chemistry, biology, ecology Experience in environmental consulting or the environmental industry, drilling, environmental sampling. Experience using Google Workspace applications. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite applications, data management, spreadsheets.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. When assigned to an environmental program at the Maryland Department of the Environment, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website. Special Requirements The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Medical Monitoring Program (MMP) is designed to detect health risks or adverse effects of occupational exposure to hazardous materials and to direct targeted treatment and occupational illness/injury prevention strategies. MDE employees who may be exposed to hazardous materials are required to participate in a pre-placement, regular and/or post-termination medical examination. MDE has determined that this position be part of the MMP; therefore, applicants selected for employment must successfully complete and pass the medical monitoring examination as a condition of employment. Information regarding the MMP is provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration website. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
