School Nurse

SUMMARY: Reporting to the Assistant Head of School, coordinate the purchasing of supplies and upkeep of office machines, and provide administrative support to administration and faculty as needed. This is an in-person role, and regular onsite attendance is an essential function of the position. The employee must be onsite to support daily operations, respond promptly to infirmary-related situations, and perform additional duties that require physical presence at the school. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty to the satisfaction of the administration. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Science (BSN) from an accredited nursing program, and a current Registered Nursing License in the state of California. Must maintain a current CPR/First Aid Certification.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written documents, professional literature, and other material. Ability to write reports and letters. TECHNICAL SKILLS: High comfort level and proficiency with technology as a tool. Ability to use simple tools and machines, such as copiers and laminators. Ability to use computers to write reports, compose letters and emails, create documents, and communicate with parents. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and apply common sense and good judgment in dealing with everyday and emergency situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. - Dispense and record approved medications, maintain current medication supplies and replace expired medications, ensure appropriate record keeping, and coordinate the purchase of supplies.
- Oversee and manage health-related aspects of emergency response.
- Create care plans for students with medical diagnoses that require accommodations during the school day, and meet annually or as needed with parents, teachers, specialists, and administration to review care plans.
- Develop policy and procedure manuals to guide the delivery of health services and safeguard students and school personnel, adapting policies and protocols to the needs of the school, conditions of the students, and new medical technology.
- Utilize evidence-based nursing practice.
- Participate in nursing assessments and make recommendations for follow-up with outside medical or other providers as needed.
- Coordinate training and education of faculty and staff in first aid, CPR, and bloodborne pathogens, and establish nursing policies in response to emergencies.
- Cooperate with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.
- Maintain and keep current TB, CPR, and First Aid training records, and manage notification of renewals.
- Collect annual employee emergency health information.
- Partner with the Emergency Preparedness Team to ensure that medical supplies are readily available and procedures are in place.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current school nursing best practices and state regulations related to school health services and immunizations.
- Maintain active membership in state and national professional school nursing organizations.
- Coordinate annual vaccination and blood drives for the community.
- Greet all guests, parents, and students who come onto campus in a gracious, welcoming manner.
- Communicate respectfully, clearly, and honestly in verbal, electronic, and written form with parents, administrators, and colleagues, and maintain a sensitive, cooperative, and flexible demeanor in interactions.
- Positively contribute to the schoolwide community.
- Demonstrate professionalism through reliability, punctuality, and personal appearance and self-care, and maintain personal integrity and a respectful attitude in all relationships, and positively contribute to the school community.
- Provide for the physical safety of children through anticipation and removal of hazards, visual observation of children active or at rest, and by appropriately responding to injuries.
- Follow all personnel policies and the guidelines of the Emergency Response Plans, and take responsibility for students' safety in an emergency situation or drill.
