The City of Eagan is accepting applications for Police Cadets. Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or have already completed a post-secondary degree program leading to an associate's or bachelor's degree. Applicants who have completed POST-mandated skills training are also eligible to apply. Individuals hired for this position may be eligible for tuition reimbursement and may continue their education while working in the Cadet position.
We're seeking individuals with a desire to assist us in serving a diverse community. Diverse candidates are encouraged to apply. This position may include rotating shift work, including weekend and holiday hours, up to 29 hours per week.

Position Summary
Police Cadets are visible in the community and participate in community outreach initiatives. They also support the organization in maintaining the police department's vehicle fleet, perform errands, assist the public when necessary, and perform other tasks as assigned below. The Police Cadet is a training position to evaluate candidates for the position of Police Officer for the City of Eagan. Individuals in this position must make continuous progress toward their degree in Law Enforcement or a related degree and must be considered a viable candidate for promotion to Police Officer. Should the Police Chief determine that a Police Cadet will not be hired as a Police Officer with the City of Eagan, the individual will not be able to continue in the position. Equipment & Fleet Maintenance
- Ensure all squad cars are serviced at proper intervals
- Monitor the equipment associated with the department's vehicles and recommend replacement as necessary
- Work with sworn staff to ensure they have a clean vehicle in proper working order for shift use
- Deliver vehicles in need of repair to the appropriate city shop or dealership for service. Also performs minor squad repairs if able
- Ensure the cleanliness of the garages and other areas within the police department
- Manage, inventory and order miscellaneous supplies
- Refill squad fire extinguishers and order oxygen. Maintains speed trailer; assigning locations, set-up, take-down, download data, and print reports
- Assist IT with upgrades and repairs of squad laptops
- Assist with duties in the Property Room
- Respond to all requests made by the Police Department or City Hall for various transporting of prisoners, deliveries of any kind and miscellaneous errands. Supervisor notification is expected if such requests cannot be accommodated during prescribed working hours. I.E. Bank Deposits, Subpoena Service, transport evidence to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
- Back up CSO II/Animal Control Officer when requested and take over animal control duties in the absence of the CSO II/Animal Control Officer
- When applicable issue summons/citations City Code Violations
- Assist sworn staff with duties as requested
- Respond to and investigate complaints; performs necessary follow up regarding bites, potential rabies and need for quarantines
- Determine/authorize the placement of animals for treatment, shelter or at times euthanizing. Make referrals to other agencies when appropriate
- Interpret State statutes and City ordinances in order to take appropriate law enforcement action. I.E. snow bans, parking, junk vehicles, dog-related violations
- Provides public education to a variety of civic groups with regard to animal care and treatment, regulations/ordinances and wildlife management
- In general, assist sworn officers with their duties as requested or assigned
- Report any criminal activity occurring in the city to dispatcher immediately. Enforcement action will be taken when directed
- Draft minor police reports such as criminal damage to property and theft as needed. When applicable issue summons/citations regarding City Code Violations
- Participate and stay proficient on department recognized defensive tactics
- Test participants in the Dakota County Safe Streets program
- Fingerprinting for applicant background investigations
- Book and Release of criminals for Officers/Detectives
- Maintain speed trailer. Assigning locations, set-up, takedown, download data, and print reports
- Perform manual speed surveys and input data
- Assist with bike rodeos and other public relation duties
- Subpoena Service
- Police Department tours
- Processing of found property
- Testify in court and other related hearings associated with the position
- High School Diploma or equivalent G.E.D.
- Valid driver's license
- Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution majoring in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or a related field OR already possess a degree
- Associate's or bachelor's degree must be completed during duration of employment
- Must successfully complete a background investigation, physical and psychological exam, medical exam, and drug test
- Ability to perform all essential position functions under the working conditions described
- Involuntary terminations within the past five (5) years may result in application rejection for non-police, sheriff, and government-related positions
- Involuntary terminations WILL result in application rejection for police, sheriff, and government-related positions
- Experience working with and communicating with the public
- Ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing
- Previous experience in volunteering and community outreach initiatives
- The ability to make presentations to groups of citizens to enhance the department's community contacts
- 80% field; 20% office
- The employee may be required to do sustained physical work, in any weather conditions and should expect to be exposed to all elements
- Employees are required to wear a department uniform that includes shirt, pants and boots or shoes
- The employee will need to have an ability to carry or lift equipment or animals up to 35 pounds or assist in putting animals up to 120 pounds in a vehicle. The employee must have the ability to learn and pass a Defensive Tactics Training Course
- Ability to work with animals
- Ability to see objects clearly and read computer screens and written material
- Ability to answer phones and take reports daily, by telephone
- Ability to effectively deal with people and skilled in report writing
- Required to make progress towards educational degree with the idea of fulfilling the requirements for becoming a police officer
- May include rotating shift work, up to 24 hours per week, including weekend and holiday hours
