The City of Woodbury utilizes a Public Safety Model to deliver police, fire and emergency medical services. Woodbury Public Safety is proud of the positive relationship we have with the community we serve! Woodbury Police Officers work with the community to prevent crimes and resolve public safety issues, protect life and property, maintain order, apprehend criminals, investigate criminal offenses and motor vehicle crashes and enforce laws and ordinances. The work involves an element of personal danger. Work is performed under the limited supervision of a Sergeant. We offer many opportunities, including Detective, K-9 Officer, SWAT, School Resource Officer, Community Support and Impact Units, Field Training, Bike Patrol, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Operator and Training Officers and other Instructor positions. Interviews will take place on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Works a variety of hours and must be able to detect suspicious situations or hazards from a distance, up close and under low light conditions. Acts with or without direct supervision and exercises good discretion and independent judgment. Develops positive relationships with the community. Works with the community to prevent crimes and resolve other public safety issues. Drives department vehicles, usually alone, under routine, emergency, and pursuit circumstances, in all traffic and weather conditions, safely and in compliance with state statutes and department policy. Patrols the city, primarily in a motor vehicle. This includes making frequent stops which results in exiting and re-entering the vehicle. Alternative methods of patrol include but are not limited to foot patrol and bicycle patrol. Conducts security checks of city parks and other public facilities, business buildings and private dwellings. Provides first aid, guidance, general information and assistance to the public. Dispatched by radio and computer to locations to perform police functions. Responds to general calls for service, crimes, fires, accidents, medicals, hazardous materials situations and natural disaster incidents and takes appropriate actions. Takes necessary and appropriate safeguards to prevent exposure to infectious or other hazardous materials. Conducts preliminary/initial investigations on crimes and traffic crashes. Locates and/or searches areas for victims, suspects or witnesses; interviews and records statements of victims, suspects, and witnesses; gathers and labels evidence; executes search warrants; and prepares required reports. Enforces city, state and federal laws and assists any person whose safety or property is threatened. At times, must act immediately to protect the personal safety of another. Apprehends persons suspected of committing crimes. Arrests may vary from writing a citation, custodial arrest, to subduing a suspect using force as authorized by law. Must be prepared to use deadly force when justified. Interacts cooperatively with other law enforcement, criminal justice and other social/community agencies. Operates a variety of equipment including, but not limited to: Police vehicle, traffic radar, portable breath testing devices, computers, cameras, flashlights, portable radios, fingerprinting equipment, control devices and weapons, while carrying out the assigned police duties. Removes equipment from locations within the interior or trunk of the vehicle. Uses communication skills to carry out daily police functions and to testify in court, speak to community groups or to talk to students in schools. Writes detailed reports to document activities. Answers questions from the public on the phone or in person on matters such as complaints and law interpretation. Makes referrals to proper agencies. Interviews witnesses, victims and criminal suspects. Keeps abreast of current events, as well as changes in laws, department policies and the field of public safety by reading a wide variety of materials and attending training sessions. Continually meets the acceptable standards of behavioral traits/positive indicators including, but not limited to: community and customer focus, respect for diversity, effective communication, officer safety, personal responsibility, intuition, divided attention, psychological resilience, problem solving and working as a team. Fosters an inclusive work culture and advances the City's diversity, equity and inclusion goals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be eligible to be licensed as a full time Police Officer in Minnesota by September 1, 2026. Must possess a valid and unrestricted Minnesota driver's license (or a driver's license from a contiguous state if not a Minnesota resident), or be able to obtain one prior to employment and must have the ability to drive Must have a satisfactory driving record Must have an Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice or related field OR must have completed the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training requirements for reciprocity or military reciprocity by September 1, 2026. Pursuant to Minnesota Rule 6700.0700, A person eligible to be licensed shall meet the following minimum selection standards before being appointed to the position of peace officer. A. The applicant shall be a citizen of the United States or eligible to work in the United States under federal requirements. B. The applicant shall possess a valid Minnesota driver's license; or in case of residency therein, a valid driver's license from a contiguous state; or eligibility to obtain either license. C. The applicant shall complete a comprehensive written application. D. The applicant shall submit to a thorough background search, including searches by local, state, and federal agencies, to disclose the existence of any criminal record or conduct which would adversely affect the performance by the applicant of peace officer duties. E. The applicant must not be required to register as a predatory offender under Minnesota Statutes, section 243.166 or 243.167. F. No applicant may be appointed to the position of peace officer who has been convicted: (1) of a felony in this state or in any other state or federal jurisdiction: (2) of any offense in any other state or federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in Minnesota; (3) under Minnesota Statutes, section 609.224, 609.2242, 609.231, 609.2325, 609.233, 609.2335, 609.234, 609.324, 609.465, 609.466, 609.52, or 609.72, subdivision 3; or convicted under any state or federal narcotics or controlled substance law irrespective of any proceeding under Minnesota Statutes, section 152.18, or any similar law of another state or federal law; or (4) of any of the crimes listed in this item in another state or federal jurisdiction, or under a local ordinance that would be a conviction if committed in Minnesota. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice or related field from an accredited educational institution. Fluent in a 2nd language. Currently employed as a full time police officer with one or more years of experience and no longer a probationary employee Completion of a 10 week (or longer) field training process PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Hearing: Normal hearing needed. Police Officers must discriminate among similar sounds in environments with a great amount of background noise. They must be able to detect suspicious activity from a distance or to receive important information despite radio or siren noise. Smell: The employee must be able to smell in order to detect the presence of hazardous materials or illicit drugs. Speech: Must be able to communicate effectively and read and understand correspondence, memoranda and materials. Lifting: Must frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 165 pounds. Touch: Must have ability to use touch in order to operate equipment properly and to administer CPR and other first aid procedures. Walking/ Mobility: Must be able to walk or crawl while carrying or lifting. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs or ladders. Must be able to balance and have the ability to steady oneself and keep from falling. Must be capable of reaching (extend the hands or arms in any direction), capable of utilizing both gross and fine muscle functions for the handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with the hands), fingering (picking, pinching, or otherwise working with the fingers), and feeling (perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by means of receptors in skin, particularly those of the fingertips). All lifting and/or walking/mobility requirements are to be met while in full protective gear, which weighs approximately 20 pounds. Requires frequent use of personal computer, telephone, copy machine, and two-way radio. Must be able to operate a police vehicle, including driving in emergency mode in all weather.
