Public Safety Officer

The Lansing School District serves over 10,000 PreK-12 students across 25 school buildings in the increasingly diverse urban community of Lansing, MI. The Public Safety Officer will maintain the safety and security of their building by responding to emergency and non-emergency situations. The position involves maintaining confidentiality, conducting investigations, and ensuring proper communication with staff. This is a full-time role, requiring flexibility and strong decision-making skills. \n Qualifications - Education & Certification Minimum high school diploma plus some college coursework Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred. Qualifications - Experience MCOLES certification preferred, or ability to obtain certification. Previous law enforcement or security experience preferred. Qualifications - Skills/Knowledge Strong communication, investigation, and report-writing skills. Ability to make quick decisions and maintain confidentiality. Sample Job Responsibilities Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls. Supervise and investigate incidents, maintaining professionalism under stress. Conduct thorough investigations and write detailed reports. Apply state and federal law provisions and department procedures. Work Environment & Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Must be able to stand, walk, and move quickly between indoor and outdoor settings for extended periods. Regularly required to bend, kneel, crouch, and assist with physical transfers or interventions involving students. Must be able to lift, push, or carry up to 50 pounds as needed. Frequent verbal communication is required to support students, coordinate with staff, and manage emergent situations. Occasional use of computers, radios, and other communication or documentation tools. May be exposed to noise, weather conditions, and other elements associated with a school environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. \n $20.13 - $24.01 an hour Hourly rate based on CCLPI salary schedule.
