Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III

TxDOT is seeking an Equipment Mechanic I, II or III based in Snyder, TX. This position supports TxDOT's mission by maintaining and repairing a wide range of wheeled vehicles, including passenger vehicles, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment. Fleet mechanics play a critical role in keeping Texas moving. We support daily operations and respond to emergency and inclement weather events that impact communities across the state. This position is open to both experienced mechanics and those looking to develop their skills in a structured, supportive environment.

Equipment Mechanic I - $50,000 - $60,000

Equipment Mechanic II - $55,000 - $70,000

Equipment Mechanic III - $60,000 - $80,000

This position is for one Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Minimum Salary: 40,918.00

Maximum Salary: 61,130.00

Position Description Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: Equipment Mechanic I, II & III: - Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems. - Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information. - Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system. - Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges. - Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights. - Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities. - Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. - Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios. - Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems. - Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment. - Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Equipment Mechanic II - Responsibilities in addition to those listed above - Trains less experienced technicians. - Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required. Equipment Mechanic III - Responsibilities in addition to those listed above - Leads and trains less experienced technicians. - Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.

Minimum Qualifications: Education: No degree/diploma required. Experience: Equipment Mechanic I - 2 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Equipment Mechanic II - 4 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Equipment Mechanic III - 7 years in Automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair Associate's degree in automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Safety Impact Certificate Commercial Driver's License Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed, if performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license. Preferred Qualifications: Commercial driver's license (CDL) Diesel or Automotive Technology Associate's Degree or technical certifications ASE Certifications Experience using diagnostic equipment and software Experience working on heavy equipment or construction equipment

Competencies Competencies Equipment Mechanic I: Proficient Skill In: - in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade - in mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines - diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications using computers and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel and Word - troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems - brake repairs to include antilocking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems - diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications Ability to: - read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics - follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures - communicate effectively Knowledge of: - automatic and manual shift transmission repair Equipment Mechanic II & III - Competencies in addition to those above Extensive knowledge of: - mechanical equipment operation and maintenance Expert skill in: - brake repairs to include antilocking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems - troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems Proficient skill in: - coordinating labor, materials and equipment - reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts Equipment Mechanic III - Competencies in addition to those above Expert diagnostic skills in: - automotive and diesel computer applications
