Tech Services Supervisor II – Chamber Supervisor. A university‑leading position focused on managing growth chambers, supervising staff, ensuring safety, and supporting research at the Cornell University Agriculture Experimental Station. Responsibilities Provide daily hands‑on operational management for approximately 130 growth chambers and the SARL quarantine labs, greenhouses, and incubators across three hubs and five buildings. Consult with faculty and investigators to determine project needs, coordinate experimental set‑up, and adjust chamber set‑points. Provide technical support and communicate policies to researchers, coordinate experimental setup and chamber modifications. Supervise the CALS Growth Chamber Maintenance Crew of three technicians, oversee KPL and chamber crew machine shops, and manage hiring, performance evaluations, safety and training programs. Plan and propose continued improvements to growth chamber facilities, supervise and train staff in programming computerized environmental controls (heating, cooling, ventilation, humidity, irrigation, lighting, CO2, etc.). Coordinate pest management, plant care, and maintenance with Greenhouse Managers and facility staff. Maintain growth chamber equipment database, recommend policies, user fee schedules and replacement schedules. Work with utilities, trades, vendors and external engineers to upgrade chambers for performance and energy efficiency. Manage space requests, billing reconciliation, budgeting assistance, and vendor negotiations. Serve as Building Coordinator for facilities housing chambers; oversee physical plant functioning and monitoring. Be on call 24 h/day for emergencies; ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations and CALS and University policies on refrigerant handling and other safety matters. Minimize energy and resource consumption by promoting sustainable operations. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in horticulture, plant science, pathology, entomology, soil and crop science, or related field with 3 + years of supervisory experience in chamber operations or plant growth facilities. 3 + years of successful supervisory experience, including hiring, training and mentoring staff. Strong leadership ability, customer‑service orientation, teamwork, and ability to foster positive relationships. Proficiency in plant physiology, nutrition and integrated pest management. Technical aptitude with plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, and computerized environmental control systems. Experience training others in chamber maintenance and repairs. Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; ability to cope with stress and prioritize tasks. Must be able to conduct tours and speak with visitors clearly and confidently. Must have a valid New York State driver’s license, reliable transportation, and be cleared to drive for university business. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; must obtain OSHA forklift operator certification within one year. Must obtain EPA Universal Certification or 608 Type I & II for refrigerants within one year. Must complete Cornell Supervisory Development program within first year; must complete Cornell Supervisory Development Training within one year.
