Police Officer - Lateral Level

Position Overview The position protects life and property, prevents and suppresses crime, apprehends criminals, and enforces laws and ordinances. Work involves patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement, resolving complaints, and report writing. Benefits Lateral incentive bonus up to $20,000 Educational incentive pay: 90 quarter credits, 60 semester credits, or AA = additional 6%; BA/BS = additional 8% Premium pay for specialty assignments and longevity after 5 years of service (see labor agreement) Responsibilities Patrol the city to preserve law and order, prevent and discover crimes, enforce traffic regulations. Respond to calls for service involving traffic accidents, domestic situations, misdemeanors or felony offenses, and other public disturbances; take necessary police action. Provide assistance to citizens in critical or emergency situations where lives and/or property may be endangered. Investigate complaints of crimes, gather evidence at crime scenes, locate and question witnesses. Prepare and present records and cases for prosecutions and/or investigation of criminal, civil, and traffic offenses; testify as a witness in court. Assist other jurisdictions and agencies in routine law enforcement activities, emergency situations, and undercover investigations involving narcotics, gambling, and other activities. Train reserve police officers. Maintain department and personal equipment in good operating condition. Maintain firearms proficiency. Assist with animal control activities. Qualifications Experience: Minimum one‑year experience within the last two years as a commissioned, full‑time, fully compensated peace officer in a civilian jurisdiction after completing a full‑time police basic training academy recognized by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Reserve experience does not count. Tribal Officer experience considered on a case‑by‑case basis. Education: High school diploma or GED. Age: At least 21 years old. Examinations: Must pass the City’s civil service examination for Lateral Police Officer and meet extensive background, polygraph, psychological, medical, drug screening (including LEOFF II requirements). Criminal: No felony convictions. Citizenship: US citizen or lawful permanent resident. Schedule: Must be able to work shift schedules up to twelve hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Physical: Able to lift up to 25 lbs frequently, 25–75 lbs occasionally, 75–100 lbs rarely or in emergency; meet vision requirements; stand, walk, run, sit, use hands, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl. Licenses & Certifications Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy completed (or equivalent out‑of‑state academy recognized by Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission). Washington State Peace Officer Certification maintained. Valid Washington State driver’s license. First aid and CPR certifications (current or to be obtained within six months). Additional Information Physical demands: frequent standing, walking, running; hand use; lifting up to 25 lbs frequently; 25–75 lbs occasionally; 75–100 lbs rarely or in emergency; vision: close, color, night, distance, peripheral, depth perception, adjust focus.
