Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MR)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval and award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the application. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) – and 7407(d). Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification required for assignments that include CT, MRI or Mammography duties performed independently as applicable. Advanced certification indicates the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and passed the designated examination. In modalities requiring advanced certification, technologists without an advanced certification may receive on‑job training under the oversight of a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months or equivalent in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or another recognized accrediting agency. Grandfathering: Applicants may qualify as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who meet the criteria). Grade Determinations – Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MR) – GS‑0647‑12: At least one year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level that fully meets the KSAs at that level. Experience includes serving as chief radiologic technologist at medical facilities with comprehensive and complex radiographic and imaging programs; planning and directing the radiologic technology program at active‑affiliated medical centers with critical care and emergent inpatient services; preparing budget and cost estimates; training, counseling, disciplining, evaluating, and promoting employees; full supervisory responsibility for a large staff; participating in setting performance standards; and demonstrating knowledge, skills, and abilities such as full range of supervisory duties, consulting on planning radiologic technology services, participating in research, consulting with staff and resident physicians, and assessing and evaluating service delivery. Preferred Experience: Over 5 years as an MRI Technologist, with at least 3 years as an MRI Lead/Coordinator; Bachelor's Degree Preferred. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard, please visit Duties Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) – position assigned to the Medical Imaging Service at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. Primary supervisor for the MRI department; assumes responsibility of the appropriate section when other sectional supervisors are absent and ensures strict adherence to MRI safety policies throughout the section. Coordinates with other services, sections and units to resolve problems or improve current procedures within the radiology department. Prepares formal requests for new equipment with complete justification, including quotes, staff requirements, training and space considerations. Prepares reports and briefs the Program Director on highlights, problems encountered or anticipated. Develops and implements written instructions, procedures and special instructions for non‑routine or complex assignments. Ensures that employees are kept informed of management goals and objectives and keeps the immediate supervisor informed of employee participation and concerns. Reviews, approves and disapproves leave in a timely manner and makes necessary adjustments to workload and staff accordingly. Ensures that monthly, quarterly and annual reports are accurate and submitted timely. Reviews new developments in the field and recommends those that would improve section operations. Evaluates activities within the section to measure productivity, workflow and effectiveness of methods, techniques and procedures. Provides training, counseling, disciplining, evaluating and promoting the growth of employees within the section. Participates in setting performance standards of supervised employees. Performs other duties as assigned on a daily basis. Pay: Competitive salary with regular salary increases; higher step rate may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA. Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time off per year (13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays); selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth, adoption or foster care placement. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of eligible childcare costs, up to a monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% VA contributions. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care; many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement. Telework: Not Available. This is not a virtual position.
