Job Title: Clinical Research Nurse I (Night Shift)

Job Description

This Clinical Research Nurse I role focuses on providing high-quality nursing care to clinical trial participants while ensuring their safety, informed consent, and privacy throughout study execution. The position is based in a clinical research unit in the suburbs of Kansas City and primarily covers overnight shifts, with flexibility for variable hours and potential day-shift opportunities for experienced clinical research nurses. The nurse follows study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while supporting clinical operations and contributing to a culture of patient safety and excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety and informed consent of clinical trial participants throughout the duration of each study.
• Safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of clinical trial participants and sponsor information at all times.
• Carry out clinical trial procedures in accordance with study protocols, GCP guidelines, and established SOPs.
• Perform ongoing monitoring and safety evaluations for clinical trial participants during their stay in the unit.
• Administer investigational products (IP) as directed by study protocols and ensure accurate documentation.
• Perform catheter placement and related clinical procedures as required by the study.
• Observe and document participant responses and adverse events, ensuring appropriate follow-up and escalation.
• Identify opportunities to enhance safety practices within the clinical research unit and communicate recommendations to leadership.
• Serve as a mentor and resource to members of the Clinical Operations team, supporting their development and performance.
• Coordinate Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) training sessions for Clinical Operations staff as needed.
• Promote and uphold high standards of customer service, quality, and patient safety within the department.
• Support study-related informed consent processes during participant screenings when requested.
• Provide training to staff on clinical trial processes relevant to their roles and responsibilities.
• Communicate study updates and progress to appropriate team members to ensure alignment and awareness.
• Proactively escalate issues, concerns, and potential risks to supervisors and management, while sharing proposed solutions.
• Participate in pre-screening of patients for study eligibility, including chart reviews and other screening activities.
• Contribute to patient recruitment efforts for clinical trials as needed.
• Maintain readiness and proper functioning of safety equipment within the clinical research unit.
• Adhere to variable hour staffing requirements, including providing availability for at least four shifts per month.
• Follow proper call-off procedures immediately in the event of vacations, illness, or family emergencies that affect shift availability.
• If changing availability with less than one week’s notice, arrange coverage for any assigned shifts and obtain approval from the supervisor and scheduling department.

Essential Skills

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) qualification with the ability to practice in Kansas.
• Ability to work overnight shifts, preferably Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday in four 10-hour blocks, with flexibility for approximately 30 hours per week if needed.
• Willingness to work as a variable hour employee, with schedules based on business needs and available hours.
• Ability to provide availability for at least four shifts per month, with each shift availability being at least four hours in length.
• Strong clinical assessment skills to monitor participant safety and identify adverse events.
• Competence in performing clinical procedures such as catheter placement and investigational product administration in accordance with protocols.
• Ability to follow detailed study protocols, GCP guidelines, and SOPs accurately and consistently.
• Strong documentation skills for recording participant observations, adverse events, and study-related procedures.
• Effective communication skills to share study updates, escalate issues, and collaborate with clinical operations staff and leadership.
• Commitment to maintaining participant confidentiality and safeguarding sensitive information.
• Ability to mentor and serve as a resource for other team members within Clinical Operations.
• Reliability in following scheduling, call-off, and shift coverage procedures for variable hour employment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• No Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required; support is available for re-certification if needed.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) knowledge is beneficial, especially for coordinating staff training.
• No prior clinical research experience is required; training on clinical trial processes will be provided.
• Experience in patient pre-screening, chart review, and patient recruitment is advantageous.
• Familiarity with clinical research and clinical trial environments is a plus.
• Strong customer service orientation and dedication to high standards of patient safety and quality.
• Ability to adapt to fluctuations in business needs and work effectively in a variable hour staffing program.
• Comfort working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary clinical operations team.

Work Environment

The role is based in a dedicated clinical research unit located in a suburb of Kansas City. The environment is protocol-driven, with a strong emphasis on patient safety, quality of care, and regulatory compliance. Nurses work closely with clinical operations staff and study teams to execute clinical trials, using standard clinical equipment and maintaining safety equipment in ready status. The position primarily involves overnight shifts, with a preferred schedule of Friday through Monday in four 10-hour shifts, though there is flexibility for approximately 30 hours per week. The role operates within a variable hour staffing program, meaning hours are not guaranteed and schedules are determined by business needs and available shifts. Variable hour employees must provide availability for at least four shifts per month, with each availability block being at least four hours. In this environment, adherence to scheduling procedures, call-off protocols, and shift coverage requirements is essential. The culture emphasizes mentorship, ongoing training, and continuous improvement of safety practices, offering opportunities to coordinate and participate in BLS and ALS training sessions for staff.

This is a Contract position based out of Overland Park, KS.

The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $40.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
