Job Title: Medical Assistant – Community Health & HIV Services

Job Description

This role is a primarily back-office Medical Assistant position in a high-volume, fast-paced community health clinic with a strong focus on HIV testing, counseling, and phlebotomy. You will support underserved populations by providing compassionate, culturally sensitive care while working closely with providers and a multidisciplinary team. The position requires reliability, strong clinical skills, and a commitment to equitable, patient-centered care.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-volume phlebotomy, including blood draws, finger sticks, urine collection, and specimen processing in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Provide client-centered pre- and post-test HIV counseling, ensuring patients understand test results, implications, and next steps.
• Conduct HIV/STD risk assessments and deliver risk reduction and prevention education tailored to each patient’s needs.
• Take vital signs, measure height, weight, and body mass index (BMI), and accurately document findings in medical records.
• Room patients efficiently, prepare charts, and ensure providers have all necessary information prior to examinations.
• Assist physicians and nurses during exams and procedures by handling instruments, preparing and disinfecting treatment sites, and applying or removing dressings and bandages.
• Prepare treatment rooms by keeping them neat, clean, and fully stocked with necessary supplies and equipment, maintaining sanitary and sterile conditions.
• Perform urine dipsticks and finger-stick tests for hemoglobin and glucose measurements, and log all specimens accurately for testing.
• Provide counseling and rapid HIV testing to clients who seek those services, ensuring a supportive and nonjudgmental environment.
• Support linkage to HIV primary medical care for newly diagnosed patients, individuals who have never engaged in care, and patients who have dropped out of care.
• Develop and implement focused strategies to improve ongoing engagement in HIV primary care for patients at risk of falling out of care.
• Maintain monthly equipment logs for clinical devices and testing equipment, ensuring all tools function safely and accurately.
• Support referral submission and tracking, ensuring patients receive timely access to specialty and follow-up services.
• Assist with patient discharge by reinforcing provider instructions, follow-up plans, and education on medications or treatments.
• Maintain accurate and complete documentation in accordance with funder, quality management, and clinic requirements.
• Ensure strict HIPAA compliance at all times, protecting patient privacy and confidentiality.
• Greet and register patients when needed, assist with completion of necessary forms, answer telephones, and schedule appointments as required.
• Retrieve medical files and maintain medical records in an organized, accurate manner to support efficient clinic operations.
• Collaborate closely with social workers, housing specialists, and clinical staff to coordinate comprehensive, patient-centered care.
• Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality, and commit fully to a Monday–Friday onsite schedule, with the potential to float to other areas if needed.

Essential Skills

• Medical Assistant diploma or certificate from a recognized institution.
• Current CPR/BLS certification.
• Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
• Minimum 2 years of Medical Assistant experience preferred; candidates with at least 1 year of experience will be considered if they have strong phlebotomy, HIV experience, or CMA/CPT certification.
• Proficiency in high-volume phlebotomy, including blood draws, finger sticks, and specimen handling.
• Demonstrated experience in HIV testing, counseling, or HIV-focused care is strongly preferred.
• Ability to conduct HIV/STD risk assessments and provide prevention education.
• Strong clinical skills in taking vitals, rooming patients, and assisting providers during exams and procedures.
• Ability to commit to a full-time, Monday–Friday onsite schedule.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality, with the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced clinic.
• Experience in primary care, community health, nonprofit, or Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) settings is strongly preferred.
• Commitment to compassionate, culturally sensitive care for underserved populations.
• Ability to maintain accurate documentation and adhere to funder and quality management requirements.
• Knowledge of and adherence to HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Phlebotomy certification (CPT) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential.
• HIV clinic or HIV-focused care, which is a major differentiator for this role.
• Experience in community health, nonprofit, or FQHC environments.
• Previous experience in hospital, emergency room, or urgent care settings.
• Spanish language skills are a plus but not required.
• Comfort working in a high-volume, fast-paced clinical setting.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to provide client-centered counseling.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with social workers, housing specialists, and other clinical team members.

Work Environment

The role is based in a high-volume, fast-paced community health clinic that serves underserved populations. You will work onsite Monday through Friday as part of a tight-knit, long-tenured team that values collaboration and mutual support. The environment is mission-driven and community-focused, with a strong emphasis on equitable, patient-centered care. You will collaborate closely with social workers, housing specialists, and clinical staff, using Electronic Medical Records and standard clinical equipment such as phlebotomy tools, point-of-care testing devices, and monitoring equipment. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Hollywood, CA.

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $24.00/hr.
