Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Hematopathology Department. Shift: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM. Pay range: $36.843 – $44.377 hourly. Job Summary Under appropriate supervision, exercises independent judgment and technical expertise as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by performing high complexity tasks and testing in all areas including Point of Care Testing (POCT), Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Banking, Hematology Immunology and other areas within the Department of Pathology. Provides technical guidance, training, and direction to co‑workers, supervisors, and administrative staff to operate the laboratory at optimal levels. Assists with development and incorporation of new methods and procedures, monitors compliance with regulatory standards, and manages quality controls. Typical Duties Performs highly responsible, difficult and complex procedures in all laboratory sections under general direction. Participates in oversight, training, and coordination of MLS, Laboratory Technicians and other support staff. Serves as primary person demonstrating correct execution of regular and specialized tasks and providing technical interpretation. Confers and consults with supervisor to establish criteria, standards, and measures of proficiency; assists with planning and coordinating the work of other personnel. Recommends purchases of equipment, assists with installation and optimization of new analyzers, works with vendors for repair and calibration. Implements quality control systems; reviews and manages QC for tests performed; proficient in QC rules. Ensures adequacy of inventories and arranges replenishment; evaluates new laboratory programs and methods. Assumes responsibility for waste management and safety procedures. Participates in blood drawing, budget and laboratory cost analysis, and other administrative tasks. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field from an accredited institution (official transcripts required). Qualify as a Medical Technologist under Illinois Clinical Laboratories Code and CLIA (proof required). National certification as MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT) or GS (ABB) (proof required). One (1) year post‑certification experience in any two laboratory sections. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Willingness to work rotating shifts including weekends. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics Proficiency in performance, analysis and verification of specialized, highly complex laboratory tests. Knowledge of Lean and Six Sigma methodology for process improvements. Ability to provide expert testimony and discussion as required. Knowledgeable in governmental and regulatory requirements applicable to clinical laboratories. Assists with CLIA and other inspections and associated standards. Knowledge of Laboratory Information System (LIS) and related computer systems. Collaborates to plan, develop and execute scientific programs. Builds effective relationships with staff; strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Independent decision‑making with sound judgment; brings difficult problems to supervisors when needed. Applies quality assurance control without supervision. Assists with blood‑drawing services and related duties. Competent in multiple laboratory sections. Manages patient and laboratory data using LIS or other PC technology. Maintains confidentiality of patient materials and complies with HIPAA. Requires very good vision, dexterity, and mental capacity; physical exertion including climbing, lifting, pushing, prolonged standing, and operation of laboratory equipment.
