Assistant United States Attorney

Position Overview Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) in the Civil Division – Milwaukee office. The United States Attorney's Office represents the people of the United States in civil matters, aiming to ensure fairness and integrity in law enforcement and the judicial system. The USAO for the Eastern District of Wisconsin handles a wide variety of civil and criminal cases encompassing 28 counties. The assistant attorney’s responsibilities include prosecuting and defending civil cases on behalf of the federal government and its employees. Key Responsibilities Prosecute and defend civil cases, including fraud investigations (healthcare, public benefits, procurement), civil rights enforcement, and civil penalties. Defend federal agencies in a variety of civil actions, such as immigration matters, employment discrimination, torts, constitutional claims, and bankruptcy. Represent the United States in civil immigration matters, such as defending habeas corpus, mandamus, and Administrative Procedure Act issues. Handle additional civil matters assigned based on office needs and workload. Responsibilities will increase and assignments become more complex with training and experience. Security Requirements Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment requires a favorable background investigation. Residency Requirements Assistants must reside in the district or within 25 miles of the appointment location. Requirements United States Citizen or National. J.D. degree and active member of the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction. At least 1 year post‑J.D. legal or relevant experience. Term position not to exceed September 30 2029, potentially extended or made permanent. Must reside in the district or within 25 miles of the appointment location. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated capacity to function with minimal guidance in an office environment. Analytical ability, good judgment, excellent oral and written communication, and litigation skills. Strong academic background, interpersonal skills, and teamwork. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Computer proficiency and support for a professional stable environment. Salary Information Basic pay ranges from $80,262 to $197,100, including 22.42% locality pay, based on years of professional attorney experience. Benefits Paid vacation, sick leave, holidays.
