Principal Engineer

The City of Santa Clara’s Public Works Department is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the Land and Property Development Division. This position will also manage the Department's role in a high‑profile, multi‑year, multi‑billion‑dollar development in a public‑private partnership between the City of Santa Clara and Related Santa Clara. The Department The Department of Public Works exists to provide the highest quality public works services. The Principal Engineer will lead the Land and Property Development Division, overseeing entitlement/planning, design, and construction support for private development projects and coordinating the public‑private partnership development. Responsibilities Lead and manage the Land and Property Development Division, including staff supervision, budget preparation and monitoring, project oversight, and community outreach. Review and approve encroachment permits, easement dedications, street/easement abandonments, subdivision maps, encroachment agreements, and collect development‑related fees. Provide customer counter services at the City’s permit center. Coordinate, facilitate, and permit the high‑profile development project across Tasman Drive, including design, construction, and public right‑of‑way work. Present at City committees, commissions, and Council; manage consultant and contractor administration; maintain project database and reporting; mentor staff; ensure projects meet plans, specifications, and standards. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution. Five (5) years of increasingly responsible civil engineering office and field work, with three years after registration and two years in a supervisory capacity. Alternative: Five years as a Senior Engineer with the City of Santa Clara. Registration and Licensure Valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers. License as a Professional Land Surveyor in California is highly desirable. Other certifications such as Qualified SWPPP Practitioner (QSP) or Qualified SWPPP Developer (QSD) are desirable. Valid Class C California driver’s license required. Compensation Annual salary range: $207,730.56 – $268,829.52.
