Job Description
Registered Nurse (RN) - Psych
Position Overview

Provide inpatient psychiatric nursing care to adults in a mental health unit. Conduct comprehensive mental status assessments, safety planning, and crisis intervention to manage acute psychiatric symptoms.

Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement treatment plans, administer psychotropic medications, and educate patients and families about coping strategies and safety planning.

Responsibilities

• Perform mental status exams, risk assessments, and safety checks to ensure patient and staff safety.
• Implement crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques as needed.
• Administer prescribed medications and monitor therapeutic responses and potential side effects.
• Observe and document behavior, mood changes, and progress toward treatment goals.
• Facilitate therapeutic activities and group sessions; support individual therapy as assigned.
• Document assessments, care plans, medication administration, and patient education in the electronic health record.
• Collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, and case managers to coordinate care and discharge planning.
• Provide patient and family education on coping strategies, medications, and safety planning.

Qualifications

Education:

BSN preferred; ADN accepted with commitment to pursuing BSN; current RN license in the United States.

Licensure:

Active RN license in the state of practice; ability to work within state-specific mental health regulations.

Certifications:

• BLS
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) or equivalent de-escalation certification
• RN-BC or PMH-BC (psych experience or certification) preferred

Experience or Skills:

Experience in inpatient psychiatric settings; strong communication, de-escalation, and patient education skills.

Experience

• Experience in inpatient psychiatric units caring for adults or mixed-age populations.
• Experience with psychiatric medications, safety planning, and therapeutic interventions.

Preferred

• PMH-BC or RN-BC (Psych) certification
• Experience with electronic health records in behavioral health settings
• Additional language skills or family education experience

Work Environment

Inpatient behavioral health unit with structured safety protocols; collaborative team environment with psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and therapists.

Shift patterns vary, including days, evenings, and weekends; emphasis on safety and patient-centered care with documentation in the electronic health record.
