Recruitment Information Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR), Downtown. Recruitment Number 26-0082 Salary $4,961 to $6,043 per month (SR-20, Step D to I) Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors. Duties Summary Food Safety Specialists promote, protect, and maintain a healthy and safe environment for the public through inspection, education, and enforcement activities. The position requires conducting site visits to all eight correctional facilities—four on Oahu and four on neighboring islands—to perform sanitation inspections and audits. Conduct inspection and audit duties for each of the eight facilities. Identify, mitigate, and prevent disease transmission caused by improperly prepared foods, contaminated waters, and adulteration or misbranding of food, drugs, cosmetics, or medical devices. Apply all phases of the sanitation sciences and use tact in the enforcement and interpretation of sanitation laws, rules, and regulations. Work independently across a defined geographic or specialty work area. Minimum Qualification Requirements Legal authorization to work – The State of Hawaii requires applicants to be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. Education – Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a physical or biological science. A copy of the official transcript must be attached as verification. Professional specialized experience – At least 1 ½ years of professional inspectional or investigational work in public health, demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of laws, regulations, bacteriology, chemistry, physics, vector control methods, and social sciences. Driver’s license – Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment. Relevant substitutions, as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements, may apply. Non‑Qualifying Experience Non‑professional technical work such as vector control program activities (inspection, education, or enforcement related to insects, rodents, or other pests) is not qualifying. Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution. Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent. Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2. Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
