Job Summary Under direct and indirect supervision, and medical direction from the physician section head, performs diagnostic, therapeutic, and biopsy ultrasound procedures. Essential Responsibilities Perform ultrasound studies and biopsy/aspiration procedures. Position patients, provide immobilization means, and conduct patient counseling as required. Select proper transducer frequency for the study. Review orders, prepare schedules, and consult with attending radiologists and registered nurses as needed. Recognize electronic equipment limitations and identify all structures visualized sonographically. Determine artifacts and normal anatomy to create a comprehensive final study. Deviate from normal techniques when necessary to provide wider latitude of visualization. Collaborate with referring physicians to plan or arrange appropriate studies when needed. Maintain daily records of exams performed. Protocol orders from the Protocol Worklist before releasing orders for scheduling. Follow all National Patient Safety Goals. Receive and double‑identify patients with appropriate criteria prior to performing the study. Ensure accuracy of information and data entry while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. Capture required documentation in the Radiology Information System (RIS). Assist with screening patients for contraindications to study or procedure. Prepare sterile fields; prepare floor stock medications; ensure sterility of surgical packs, trays, and disposables used in the assigned area. Maintain appropriate operational understanding of transducer/probe disinfectant devices and keep supplies adequate during procedures. Assist the radiologist during procedures; capture specific images and aid in biopsy specimen collection. Operate and understand all features and performance capabilities of the US systems and probes. Post‑process US images and prepare final sonographer interpretation as required; prepare images for radiologist interpretation and transmit images to the Diagnostic Imaging PACS system. Maintain working knowledge of all department equipment and devices. Report equipment malfunctions appropriately. Assume responsibilities for patient needs during the procedure. Provide service‑oriented communication with the patient, explaining procedures and answering questions. Emphasize a personalized, compassionate patient care atmosphere. Assist with patient transport and dismiss patients for transport at end of procedure. Provide instructions on appropriate safety measures to patients, family members, and hospital staff; ensure safety precautions are followed. Adhere to policy and manufacturer recommendations for operation and use of personal protection devices when operating disinfectant devices. Function as part of the resuscitation team during Code Blue and/or Rapid Response Team situations. Maintain all materials and linen supply on a daily basis; keep the assigned room in general order and cleanliness. Rotate between facilities and share on‑call responsibilities for the ultrasound service areas. Orient and train (mentor) new personnel regarding subsection operations as needed. Directly supervise student technologists during their clinical assignments. Pursue ongoing continuing education; stay knowledgeable and current regarding technological advances in diagnostic medical sonography. Attend departmental meetings and/or in‑service presentations as required. Read and initial minutes of such meetings when excused absence precludes attendance. Basic Qualifications Minimum two (2) years post‑graduate sonography experience, including successful completion of a training program in the area of specialty, if applicable. Education Completion of an approved ultrasound training program recognized by CAAHEP; or one (1) year directly related experience. License, Certification, Registration Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate. Additional Requirements N/A Preferred Qualifications Ultrasound experience in general, breast, vascular, and obstetrics imaging. Certifications in Abdomen, Breast, Vascular, and Obstetrics imaging by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ADRMS). Associate’s degree.
