Overview Under general supervision, the Equipment Service Worker performs basic servicing of county motor vehicles, maintenance and construction equipment; purchases, receives, and installs tires on county motor vehicles; assists journey mechanics on maintenance and repair jobs; cleans the interior and exterior of STAGE buses; performs minor maintenance and repair work on the county airports; drives a variety of motor vehicles as needed, including STAGE vehicles; and completes related work as required. Distinguishing Characteristics This is a working‑level Equipment Service Worker classification that involves basic servicing, mechanics assistance, tire installation, cleaning, maintenance, repair work, and driving various types of vehicles as needed. Reports To Transit Services Coordinator or Equipment Maintenance Manager Essential Functions Purchases, receives, and installs tires used on county vehicles; inspects and ensures proper maintenance of tires, mechanical steering components, lighting, and wheel alignment; checks tire air pressure, repairs tires and tubes; decides on tire repair or replacement; contacts vendors regarding specifications, volume purchasing, and product problems; keeps adequate tire inventory for a variety of motor vehicles. Services and lubricates equipment; performs basic equipment inspections and preventive maintenance on motor vehicles and county airports, reporting problems to senior staff; performs basic repairs and tune‑ups; assists with the inspection, location, and diagnosis of mechanical defects on county motor vehicles and airport and emergency equipment; assists with major overhauls and repairs; changes and installs belts and hoses; fits tire chains; assists with ordering and maintaining general parts and supply inventory. Might fill in as a relief driver on a variety of equipment including low bed and belly dump trucks, and STAGE vehicles; cleans interior and exterior of vehicles; and maintains bus stops. Knowledge of Tire installation, maintenance, and repair for a variety of motor vehicles and construction and maintenance equipment. Practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in basic motor vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair work. Basic operation and care of internal combustion engines, including lubricating requirements and preventive maintenance. Common motor vehicle parts and supplies. Safe work practices and procedures. Desired Skills Perform tire installation, maintenance, and servicing work. Assist with the inspection of motor vehicle equipment and the diagnosis of mechanical defects. Use a variety of hand and power tools in the maintenance and repair of motor vehicle and airport equipment. Perform basic testing, adjustment, repair, and overhaul work on motor vehicle equipment. Read and interpret shop and repair manuals. Maintain accurate records and reports. Use computerized inventory and parts ordering systems. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Qualifications One year of responsible work experience in performing basic motor vehicle servicing and maintenance, including tire repair and replacement. Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Special Requirements Possession of a valid and appropriate driver's license with appropriate certifications which may include medical, air brake, passenger endorsement, and vehicle transit training (VTT). Applicants will be required to submit to a pre‑employment physical examination. Participation in the County of Siskiyou Drug and Alcohol Testing program is required, including a pre‑employment/pre‑duty drug test and random drug and alcohol tests once employed. Typical Physical Requirements Occasionally sits; frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch; normal manual dexterity and eye‑hand coordination; ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use a variety of hand and power equipment used in the mechanical trades; use a computer and telephone; operate a variety of vehicles.
