Job Title Geologist 2 – Anchorage, Alaska (Alaska residents only). Position Overview This non‑permanent staff position is part of the Climate & Cryosphere Hazards Program in the Geohazards Section of the Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys. The Geologist will synthesize historical snow‑avalanche data into a centralized database to support avalanche modeling and spatial analysis. Responsibilities Design and implement a sustainable database framework for data collection, management, and analysis. Identify, evaluate, and compile historical avalanche information across Alaska from federal, state, non‑profit, and private sources. Engage stakeholders and integrate records into the database, ensuring data is well organized, accessible, and future‑proof. Analyze and validate snow‑avalanche data, performing quality control, standardization, and archival. Coordinate with team members and stakeholders via telecommunications; occasional in‑person visits may be required. Maintain oversight of data quality and documentation for ongoing research and public use. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, mining engineering, or a related field. One year of entry‑level professional experience in a related geoscience discipline; this may be satisfied by prior service as a Geologist1 with the State of Alaska. Substitution: A science bachelor’s degree with 24 semester hours in the required geoscience fields and 24 additional semester hours in natural sciences. Equivalent combinations of professional experience and graduate education are acceptable.
