Machinist (Locomotive Shop)

Inspects, maintains, and repairs locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations. Shift and Hours Second Shift - 1500 - 2300, Days off Saturday/Sunday. Compensation Initial pay between $28.31/hr - $31.85/hr based on experience. Salary will increase to $35.39/hr once qualified (typically takes 6 months to a year).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly. Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly. Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of units to ensure functionality and performance. Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts. Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations. Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box. Replaces brake shoes on locomotives. Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors. Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components. Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education And/Or Experience High School diploma/GED and one year certificate from college or technical school; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience reading blueprints. Language Skills Ability to understand both verbal and written communications - both general and technical. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Reasoning Ability Problem solving and troubleshooting skills. Must have mechanical aptitude. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Other Skills And Abilities Must be qualified welder. Licenses, Certificates, or Registrations Must have current valid driver's license. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor occurs occasionally. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, occasionally works in outside weather conditions, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Other Must have personal tools (complete set of small hand tools up to and including ½" drive ratchet and socket set).
