Skills Expected

Respiratory

• Chronic BiPAP
• CPAP
• COPD exacerbations
• Pneumonia management

Cardiac

• CHF management
• Heparin protocol administration
• Telemetry awareness

Surgical/Post-Op

• Orthopedic recovery
• Abdominal surgery recovery
• Pain management
• Early ambulation
• Post-operative complication monitoring

Drips

Titration

• RNs do not titrate drips

Common Drip

• Heparin per protocol

Be prepared to discuss:

• Monitoring for bleeding
• Lab monitoring (aPTT or anti-Xa depending on facility)
• Patient education regarding anticoagulation

Telemetry

• Remote telemetry monitoring
• Monitor technician interprets rhythms
• Floor nurses are not responsible for rhythm interpretation

Support Staff

Charge Nurse

• Present on both shifts

House Supervisor

• Available nights

PCT/CNA Support

• Days and nights
• Maximum ratio approximately 1:12

Respiratory Therapy

• Available for CPAP/BiPAP support

Scheduling

Shift Times

• 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM
• 6:00 PM – 6:30 AM

Self-Scheduling

• Available based on staffing and census

Weekends

• Currently 4 weekend shifts every 6 weeks

Holidays

• Rotational

Call/Standby

• If cancelled, may be placed on call
• 45-minute return time when called in

Floating

• Within Med-Surg scope of practice

Orientation

• 1 shift with Clinical Education
• 2 precepted unit shifts

Dress Code

• Navy Blue scrubs
