Senior Counsel

Provide primary legal support to Marathon operating business units on environmental and regulatory matters Advise on compliance with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations Advise on environmental aspects of new project development and permitting Provide environmental law support and due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures Interact with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies Collaborate with internal clients, stakeholders, and Law Organization colleagues Participate in continuing legal education and monitor legal, regulatory, economic, social, and energy-industry developments Assist in developing advocacy positions on legislative and regulatory matters and participate in trade organizations Develop programs, presentations, and training on environmental compliance and environmental law Develop environmental-law subject matter expertise and serve as a resource Conduct or oversee legal research to support legal work product and counsel delivery Requirements Juris Doctorate degree required Current license to practice law in a U.S. state, member in good standing Continued employment conditioned upon obtaining and maintaining membership in Ohio or another State Bar 5 or more years of relevant legal experience Subject matter expertise in one or more substantive areas of environmental law Experience identifying and resolving legal issues quickly and effectively Ability and willingness to learn technical aspects of company facilities, operations, products, and emerging environmental law and policy Ability to learn and teach others about complex subject matters Proficiency providing independent and direct counsel to clients Ability to manage legal risk Ability to handle multiple matters and prioritize work effectively Excellent analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, drafting, and communication skills Strong people skills and collaborative, team-oriented attitude Experience with hazardous-material transportation laws, OSHA and personal/process safety regulations, Clean Water Act permitting and compliance, NPDES, Section 401/404 permitting, or SPCC plans is a plus but not required Core Competencies Demonstrates expertise in environmental law and regulatory compliance, providing legal support for project development, mergers, and acquisitions. Capable of managing legal risks while effectively communicating and collaborating with stakeholders and regulatory agencies.
