Development Specialist
Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region
Development Specialist
Help turn generosity into lifesaving impact.
At the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR), every donation has a story. Maybe it helps provide medical care to an injured animal, gives a pet a second chance, supports a family working to keep their beloved companion, or helps create a safer, more compassionate community.
As a Development Specialist, you'll play an important behind-the-scenes role in making those stories possible. You'll help ensure donations are processed accurately, donor information is maintained with care, acknowledgements reach donors promptly, and the Philanthropy team has the data and administrative support it needs to do its best work.
If you're someone who loves organized spreadsheets, accurate data, crossing things off a to-do list, and knowing that your attention to detail directly supports animals and people in our community, this could be the role for you.
What You'll Do
As part of HSPPR's Philanthropy team, you'll help keep our fundraising operation running smoothly and make sure our donors receive the excellent service they deserve.
Your days may include:
- Processing donations from mail, online giving, recurring gifts, in-kind contributions, and other sources for our Colorado Springs and Pueblo locations.
- Entering gifts accurately and efficiently into our donor database and maintaining current, reliable donor records.
- Helping keep our database clean, organized, and healthy through routine data maintenance and cleanup.
- Processing donation mail, scanning checks and remittance slips, processing credit card gifts, and preparing acknowledgement letters and receipts.
- Providing friendly, professional assistance to donors who call, email, mail, or stop by with questions or donations.
- Supporting special events through preparation, meetings, on-site assistance, and volunteer training.
- Maintaining organized hard-copy gift files and other Philanthropy records.
- Assisting with month-end reconciliation and year-end donor statements.
- Supporting the Donor Database Manager with higher-level database and administrative projects.
- Helping the broader Philanthropy team with stewardship, administrative, data, and fundraising-related projects.
- Supporting Business Office Reception as needed by welcoming patrons, answering questions, assisting with deliveries, and helping things run smoothly.
- Sharing compelling animal stories and photos with the Philanthropy team that help our community see the lifesaving work happening every day at HSPPR.
Why This Role Matters
You may not always be the person standing in front of a crowd asking for a donation, but you'll be one of the people making sure that generosity gets where it needs to go.
Your work will help HSPPR:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with donors.
- Ensure charitable gifts are handled accurately and responsibly.
- Provide donors with timely, thoughtful stewardship.
- Give our fundraising team reliable information to support their work.
- Turn community generosity into resources for lifesaving animal welfare programs.
In short, you'll help connect people who care with the animals and programs they care about.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, dependable, and genuinely enjoys supporting others. You don't have to know everything on day one – but you should be curious, proactive, willing to learn, and comfortable figuring things out.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A high school diploma or GED.
- One to three years of related administrative and/or data-entry experience.
- Experience with data entry, 10-key, and typing.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and manage multiple responsibilities.
- The ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet-based applications.
- A positive attitude and a willingness to jump in where needed.
- The ability to work independently while also being a collaborative member of a team.
- The ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with staff, volunteers, donors, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
- Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record
Even better if you have:
- Experience in fundraising, philanthropy, nonprofit administration, or donor relations.
- Experience working with Raiser's Edge or another donor database.
- Experience with Qgiv, Omatic, MailChimp, or similar fundraising and communications platforms.
The HSPPR Experience
At HSPPR, our work is about much more than animal sheltering. We're here to support people, strengthen our community, and create better outcomes for animals.
Our mission: HSPPR offers compassionate care to animals, supports safe communities, and provides socially conscious sheltering.
We believe every member of our team contributes to that mission. Whether you're caring for an animal, helping a donor, entering a gift, answering a phone call, or making sure a database record is exactly right, your work matters.
A Few More Details
Schedule: Five 8-hour shifts, typically Monday-Friday. Weekend, evening, and holiday work may occasionally be required.
Workplace: Fully on-site.
Physical Requirements: This position regularly works at a computer but also requires periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, and crouching. Employees must be able to lift, push, and pull at least 40 pounds with reasonable accommodation. The position involves regular exposure to animals and animal allergens, and may occasionally require driving an HSPPR vehicle.
Supervisory Responsibility: None.
Ready to Put Your Attention to Detail to Work for a Great Cause?
If you're organized enough to love a perfectly reconciled spreadsheet, people-focused enough to provide excellent donor service, and passionate enough to want your work to make a difference, we'd love to hear from you.
Bring your skills. Bring your curiosity. Bring your love of making things work better. We'll provide the animals, the mission, and plenty of opportunities to make an impact.
