Job Summary:

The EMS department at RRCC is seeking an instructor to teach courses in the Emergency Medical Service program in accordance with college, state, and national policies, standards, and guidelines.

This may include day, evening, weekend, and/or distance courses in accordance with approved course of study or outline utilizing traditional and alternative methods of instruction (including computer-aided, on-line, distance learning, self-paced, interdisciplinary, etc.) where appropriate.

Coordinate class structure and organization, prepare course materials, demonstrate and maintain currency in the discipline and in teaching methodology, present instructional material effectively, maintain professional and courteous interaction with students and employees, and demonstrate sensitivity to different learning styles. Encourage student engagement and student achievement, utilize assessment data to facilitate student learning, document teaching and curriculum changes based on assessment results, incorporate course, program, and college student learning outcomes into teaching, utilize student retention strategies, integrate technology into course work as appropriate to the discipline. Assist with program and plan development and maintenance, coordinate instructional programs as assigned, review, coordinate, and recommend textbooks and/or class materials. Comply with college procedures pertaining to grading and record keeping, assist in maintaining inventory control of equipment, tools, and supplies required for classes, and in requesting repair and/or replacement for the equipment. Participate in various college, system, and/or professional activities intended to develop the faculty member and enhance his/her ability to teach effectively. Encourage students to engage in critical thinking, reflective reasoning, problem solving, collaboration, and application through active learning techniques that demonstrate how the course content has cross curriculum implications. Set and demonstrate clearly articulated learning goals so the students recognize the relevance to their academic and professional lives. Develop assessment and evaluation strategies that fairly measure student progress towards course objectives.

This position reports to the chair of the EMS department. The work schedule for this position will depend on the courses assigned which may be days, nights, or weekends at the Lakewood campus location. This position may require hours outside of normal work schedule.
This position may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge and proficiency in state and national EMS regulatory requirements and education standards at all levels
• Demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and typically underrepresented groups.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach students using traditional and alternative methods of instruction.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the classroom where appropriate.
• Required Qualifications (Applicants with these qualifications will be limited to teaching EMT courses)
• Current state or NREMT certification as a Paramedic or RN. (obtain state certification within 3 months of hire)
• Has, or qualifies for, post-secondary CTE credential including 4,000 paid non-teaching occupational hours within the last seven (7) years.
• Completion of the NAEMSE Level 1 Instructor Course within 6 months of hire (or equivalent state instructor course, or a formal degree in education)

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited academic institution in Emergency Medicine, Education, Nursing, Healthcare, Biology, Fire Science, or a closely related field with no less than 30 credit hours of coursework specific to healthcare or emergency services.
• Current state or NREMT certification as a Paramedic or RN. (obtain state certification within 3 months of hire)
• Has, or qualifies for, post-secondary CTE credential including 4,000 paid non-teaching occupational hours within the last seven (7) years.

Physical & Cognitive Demands

The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.

• Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
• Moves, positions, and transports EMS equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Occasionally pushes EMS equipment weighing up to 150 lbs.
• This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
• Frequent standing for periods of up to 8 hours in the classroom with classroom breaks during the session.
• Frequent bending during the skills/lab component of EMS courses.
• The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
• Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.

Advertised Hourly Pay

The pay for this position is $1,177.73 to $1,294.58 per credit hour, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt position and may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need.

This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.

B enefits

Medical insurance is offered to instructors and other variable hour employees who have worked, on average, at least 30 hours per week in a 12-month period. RRCC/CCCS uses an initial 12-month measurement period to determine medical benefit eligibility, and a 12-month standard measurement period. Student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours a week when classes are in session, and may work up to 28 hours a week, during academic breaks or breaks between terms at the discretion of the college, and non-classified hourly and temporary staff are limited to 28 hours in a workweek, depending on budget and need. Sick leave is granted in accordance with SB20-205, Sick Leave for Employees, accrued at one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.

Instructors and non-student hourly are required to contribute to Colorado PERA at a fixed percentage of their salary and do not contribute to Social Security. RRCC/CCCS student employees are not eligible to participate in PERA. RRCC/CCCS offers three tax-deferred investment plans, including 401(k), 403(b) and 457.
