Comptroller
LGBT Network
Description The Opportunity
The NY LGBT Network is seeking a hands-on Comptroller to run the day-to-day work of our finance department, with a particular focus on getting our government contracts billed, reimbursed, and closed out on time. We manage multiple city, county, and state contracts, each with its own budget, funding period, and reimbursement process. We need someone who has done this work directly, knows how to keep it moving, and will make sure the organization is paid promptly for the services it delivers.
This is an important position within a dynamic, mission-driven nonprofit organization. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Comptroller will be responsible for ensuring that financial operations run efficiently, accurately, and effectively while supporting the organization's programs, services, and overall mission.
We are looking for someone who understands the practical realities of nonprofit financial management, particularly the complexities of government-funded programs. This includes managing multiple contracts with different funding periods and requirements, preparing and modifying budgets, allocating personnel and expenses across funding sources, monitoring spending and reimbursements, and maximizing available funding while maintaining compliance.
This is a hands-on position requiring someone who is comfortable managing financial operations, working directly with staff, solving problems, and ensuring that work gets done accurately and on time.
Equally important, the successful candidate will be collaborative, approachable, flexible, and solutions-oriented. We are looking for someone who understands that the finance department is a partner to the organization's programs and mission. What Success Looks Like
Within the first year, the Comptroller will:
• Submit reimbursement requests for every government contract on a consistent monthly schedule.
• Reduce outstanding government receivables and shorten the time between expense and reimbursement.
• Keep contract budgets current, with modifications submitted before deadlines.
• Close out contracts fully and on time, recovering all allowable funds.
• Deliver a clean annual audit, with schedules ready when the auditors arrive. Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Operations
• Oversee the daily financial operations of the organization, including accounting, accounts payable
and receivable, general ledger management, reconciliations, and financial recordkeeping.
• Manage the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
• Monitor cash flow, organizational expenditures, and financial performance.
• Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to the CFO, President, and other organizational
leadership as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate financial records and ensure adherence to generally accepted accounting
principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting practices.
• Oversee financial systems, accounting software, and related processes to ensure accuracy,
efficiency, and accountability.
• Identify and implement improvements to financial procedures, systems, and workflows.
Government Grants & Contracts
• Oversee the financial management of government grants and contracts, including budgeting,
reporting, reimbursement, compliance, and contract closeouts.
• Manage multiple government contracts with varying contract periods, funding requirements,
reporting deadlines, and reimbursement procedures.
• Prepare, monitor, and modify grant and contract budgets in collaboration with program leadership.
• Develop and maintain appropriate personnel and expense allocations across multiple funding
sources, ensuring compliance with funding requirements and effective utilization of available
resources.
• Monitor grant expenditures and proactively identify underutilized funds, necessary budget
modifications, and opportunities to maximize allowable reimbursement and revenue.
• Prepare and oversee the timely submission of government reimbursement requests, financial
reports, and supporting documentation.
• Work closely with program directors and staff to ensure expenditures align with contract budgets,
program needs, and funder requirements.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation to support government audits, monitoring visits, and
contract compliance reviews.
• Help program leadership understand the financial requirements of their contracts and develop
practical solutions to funding and budget challenges. Budgeting & Financial Reporting
• Coordinate the development of the organization's annual operating budget in collaboration with the
CFO, President, and program leadership.
• Monitor organizational and departmental budgets throughout the fiscal year.

• Prepare financial reports, budget-to-actual comparisons, projections, and other analyses to support
effective financial management.
• Identify budget variances, potential shortfalls, and opportunities for improved resource utilization.
• Provide clear, accurate, and timely financial information to support organizational decision-making.
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
• Coordinate and manage preparation for the organization's annual independent financial audit.
• Serve as a primary day-to-day contact for external auditors, ensuring timely preparation of
schedules, reconciliations, documentation, and requested financial information.
• Coordinate the preparation of the IRS Form 990 and other required financial and regulatory filings in
collaboration with outside professionals.
• Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, government contracts, grant
requirements, and organizational financial policies.
• Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure
the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting.
• Identify potential financial or compliance issues and work with the CFO and organizational
leadership to resolve them. Finance Department Management & Collaboration
• Supervise, support, and manage the day-to-day work of the Finance/Fiscal Team.
• Establish clear expectations, responsibilities, deadlines, and accountability for financial operations.
• Ensure that financial tasks, reporting requirements, reimbursements, and other responsibilities are
completed accurately and on schedule.
• Provide guidance and support to staff who may not have a financial or accounting background.
• Foster a responsive, supportive, and solutions-oriented approach to financial management while
maintaining appropriate controls and accountability. Requirements Who We Are Looking For
Technical financial knowledge and experience are essential, but they are only part of what will make
someone successful in this position.
The NY LGBT Network is looking for someone who knows nonprofit finance, understands government
contracts, and is comfortable rolling up their sleeves to get the work done.
The successful candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, proactive, and able to manage multiple
responsibilities and deadlines. They will understand that nonprofit financial management often requires
flexibility, creative problem-solving, and the ability to navigate complex funding requirements while
maintaining strong financial controls.
This person must be comfortable working directly with program staff, answering questions, explaining
financial requirements, and finding practical solutions to challenges.
They should have the confidence and judgment to identify problems, raise concerns, and maintain
appropriate financial standards, while also being approachable, collaborative, and willing to work with
others to find a responsible path forward.
Above all, we want someone who will be a strong fit with the NY LGBT Network's mission, values,
working environment, and organizational culture. Qualifications
• Five or more years of experience in nonprofit financial management, accounting, or a related
financial management role.
• Strong hands-on experience managing government grants and contracts, particularly those funded
by New York City, Suffolk County, New York State or other government agencies.
• Experience with government invoicing and contract systems such as NYC PASSPort.
• Demonstrated experience preparing and managing grant budgets, budget modifications, personnel
allocations, reimbursement requests, and financial reporting.
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices, GAAP, fund accounting, and internal financial
controls.
• Experience preparing financial statements, managing budgets, and overseeing accounting
operations.
• Experience coordinating annual financial audits and working with external auditors.
• Experience supervising and managing financial or accounting staff.
• Proficiency with accounting software, financial reporting systems, and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing deadlines.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain financial
information to non-financial staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, solve problems, and adapt to changing organizational
and funding requirements.
• Commitment to the mission of the NY LGBT Network and cultural competency regarding LGBTQ+
communities.
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, nonprofit management, or a
related field preferred. Significant relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a
particular degree. A CPA is not required. We place greater value on demonstrated hands-on nonprofit financial
management experience, particularly with government grants and contracts, than on any particular
professional credential.
