Services Worker

THIS POSITION IS COMPETITIVE CIVIL SERVICE CLASS AND WILL BE PROVISIONAL PENDING A POSSIBLE FUTURE CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION. Distinguishing Features of the Class: This position assists professional Department of Aging and Youth staff members by performing supportive services relating to clients’ participation in various programs administered by the local Office or Agents thereof. Employees in this class work under general supervision with leeway for independent judgment. Does related work as required. Receives and organizes work to be processed and recorded; Contacts clients, vendors, and/or insurance carriers to obtain additional information or to update information; Answer telephone and take messages or provides callers with general information; Prepares, stores and retrieves lists and documents; Updates and stores department forms on a computer using word processing software; Orders office supplies and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; Sorts, date stamps and distributes mail and packages; Maintains alphabetic, numeric and/or chronological files of correspondence, documents and materials by coding and filing new material, searching for requested material and periodically purging obsolete material; Makes copies of letters, files and reports; Schedules meetings and appointments; May serve as a receptionist and greet clients and/or visitors; Provides information to individuals or groups concerning services offered by public and private agencies. Assists clients in completing necessary forms required by the various programs. Assists Department of Aging and Youth staff in developing and supervising program activities at various congregate food sites. Assists in maintaining communications between the Department of Aging and Youth, clients and other community organizations by clarifying Office programs to individuals and conveying the needs and attitudes of clients to the professional staff. Acts as an outreach worker for the Department of Aging and Youth. Working knowledge of State and Federal agencies and programs providing services or grants related to senior citizens and/or youth; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs; Ability to understand and empathize with the needs and concerns of others. working knowledge of programs and service providers; working knowledge of the characteristics, needs and interests of older persons; ability to interpret agency programs and appropriate eligibility criteria and to communicate this information to the public; ability to supervise limited recreational and program activities; ability to relate to and motivate older persons and youth and families; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and either: One year of satisfactory paid experience in a clerical position supporting social services or community programs in a public or private agency; orSuccessful completion of 30 credit hours from a regionally accredited or N.Y.
