THIS POSITION IS FOR 7 HOURS PER DAY AT 176 DAYS PER, AND 3.5 HOURS PER DAY FOR 12 DAYS PER YEAR. PAY FOR POSITION: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5- $ 24.76 PER HOUR (25-26 PSE SALARY SCHEDULE) This position's responsibilities are to provide a wide variety of support to the school nurse by maintaining student health records, assessing the health needs of students, providing first aid, conducting health screenings, dispensing oral medication, performing catheterization, administering EpiPen injections for emergencies, nebulizer treatments, and gastrostomy tube feedings. Other responsibilities include maintaining computer records and lists, securing required health records from parents, maintaining health room supplies, and providing a variety of clerical support to the school office. Essential Functions Maintain student health records; create new records; update health information; ensure records are maintained confidentially. Attend to student health needs; assess injuries or illness to determine appropriate action; provide basic first aid; refer students to healthcare professionals as needed; determine need for nurse’s advice; call nurse for assistance; inform school nurse and principal of severe injury, illness, unexcused absence, or unusual incident; check students for head lice; contact parents as appropriate. Administer medication to students as directed by physician, according to district policy procedures and under supervision of a nurse; maintain appropriate records. Gather, assess, and record immunization information; gather health data for state reports such as scoliosis and immunization; contact parents or schools to secure health records and immunization compliance; maintain documentation of parental contacts; prepare forms for reporting purposes. Compile health records, cards, and lists; provide reports as requested; maintain health room log; complete accident reports and distribute appropriately; compile, update, and distribute health concern information. Record health screening results for each student; organize health screenings. Maintain student attendance records; track attendance, tardies, and suspension data; verify and process student absence excuses; maintain and report lunch count; inform administrator, school nurse, and/or parents of student absences. Maintain inventory of health room supplies; prepare supply orders; receive, verify, and stock supplies. Monitor student behavior in the health room; correct behavior as necessary; monitor individual health room use to prevent abuses; train and supervise student assistants. Report situations such as pregnancy, substance abuse, or physical abuse to appropriate school staff for follow-up; maintain confidentiality of student personal problems. Attend scheduled health clerk meetings/in-service. Other Functions May provide information to parents about health issues in conjunction with the school nurse. Provide a variety of clerical support to the school office such as answering telephones, filing, performing computer input and typing; provide backup and peak load assistance and coverage in the office. May process student enrollments and withdrawals; send for and receive student records; maintain student records; process teacher grade reports; provide clerical support to school counselors (scheduling appointments, compiling data for reports, typing scholarship recommendations, college applications, and other student information). May serve on various district committees or departmental work teams; model appropriate and cooperative behavior by protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines. Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position. Reporting Relationships Reports to assigned building administrator; receives lead guidance from school nurse for delivery of health services. Mental Demands Experiences frequent interruptions; required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities, which may include distraught or difficult students; may be required to deal with distraught or difficult parents. Frequently required to deal with situations that could put them in a position of liability. Works under the direction of itinerant school nurse. Physical Demands Record keeping requires substantial visual concentration; exposed to visual display terminals; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; occasionally required to attend to students’ personal hygiene; required to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids, disinfectants and medications; may be required to move ill or injured students. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, including experience maintaining accurate records. Health care experience or training strongly preferred. Allowable Substitutions Not applicable. Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Demonstrated record‑keeping skills; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; familiarity with medical terminology and basic medical procedures; keyboarding skill; ability to deal with students in a warm and confident manner; ability to work effectively as a team member and collaborate in providing services to students; problem‑solving and decision‑making skills; ability to organize activities and work independently; ability to follow and give instructions; ability to learn and apply a variety of health techniques and procedures; ability to be fair and consistent when working with students; ability to screen and treat minor student illnesses and injuries; ability to evaluate the need for and secure medical attention by trained personnel; ability to administer medication as directed; ability to handle crises effectively; ability to maintain strict confidentiality; ability to supervise and correct student behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and parents. Licenses/Special Requirements Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan. Requires first aid and CPR certification. Hepatitis B immunization is offered.
