Inspector (Geotechnical)

Summary Inspects and oversees construction of buildings, dams, utilities, walls, pavement, and other types of construction work to ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Conduct pile inspections and inspections of deep dynamic compaction process Observe compacted fills, including use of nuclear density gauges Observe utility installation, concrete testing, and rebar inspection Measure distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of structural installations and layouts Perform inspections of deep dynamic compaction process Verify levels, alignment, and elevation of installations Observe work in progress to ensure that procedures are followed and materials used conform to specifications Prepare samples of materials for laboratory testing and perform the tests Examine workmanship of finished installations for conformity to standards and approve installation Interpret blueprints and specifications for contractors and discuss deviations to ensure compliance with construction regulations Record quantities of materials received or used during specified periods Maintain daily logs of construction and inspection activities and complete daily progress reports Prepare sketches of construction installations Participate in environmental audits and prepare data summaries, data tables, data mapping and presentation, and prepare environmental reports Follow blueprints, guidelines, and diagrams Operate and maintain equipment Assist environmental engineers in the development of remediation devices Classify soils according to standard types Examine rocks, minerals, and fossils to identify and determine the sequence of processes affecting earth development Apply knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics to explain phenomena and locate mineral, geothermal, and petroleum deposits and underground water resources Apply geological knowledge to engineering problems encountered in construction projects such as dams, tunnels, and large buildings Prepare geological reports and maps, interpret research data, and recommend further study or action Conduct or participate in environmental studies Direct drilling of exploratory borings and wells Oversee installation of monitoring wells in accordance with state and federal requirements Collect or supervise collection of soil and groundwater samples for chemical analysis Determine direction of groundwater flow based on historical records and site‑specific data Perform environmental soil sampling Prepare summary and certification letters and reports Conduct pile and deep foundation inspections Inspect ground improvement Observe borings, test pits, geoprobes, and cone penetrometer tests Conduct permeability testing and well monitoring Prepare project cost estimates, proposals, reports, and mentor junior staff Work under general supervision with latitude for independent judgment Display moderate skills with high level of proficiency Adhere to environmental, construction, and OSHA safety policies and procedures to comply with local, state, and federal regulations Consult with senior peers on certain projects Identify potential new projects and seek opportunities to promote the company’s services on an ongoing basis Travel 100% of the time, which may be out of state Supervisory Responsibilities This job has some supervisory responsibilities. Education and/or Experience Preferred Bachelor's degree from a four‑year college or university; or one to four years of related experience and/or training with a high school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with inspection of compacted fills, footings, ground improvement, deep foundations, retaining walls, utilities, asphalt, concrete, and sitework elements. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification ACI/NICET/NJ DCA Special Inspector and Nuclear Densometer certification (a plus) Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to access job sites Language Skills Proficient in communicating both verbally and in writing in English. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or community members. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Mathematical Skills Ability to work with probability and statistical inference, fundamentals of solid geometry and trigonometry, and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Computer Skills Proficient or familiarity with AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, NitroPro, GSLOPE, KeyWall, Rocscience, MS Word, Excel, and Adobe products. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. Noise level is usually low to moderate. Work Environment Work environment includes office setting and approximately 100% outdoors. Employee must be able to walk frequently on uneven terrain in all types of weather including cold, rain, snow, and ice. Field work may expose worker to sun, wind, insects, plants, and animals; appropriate safety gear is required.
