Journey Level Mechanic

The Journey Level Mechanic provides maintenance repairs and rebuilding functions on District fleet vehicles. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned. Rebuilds and repairs components and auxiliary systems on vehicles or makes component exchanges. Performs minor body repairs and painting on vehicles. Diagnose and repair on power train components, brake systems, chassis components and body, lighting, heating, and electrical systems. Interprets parts lists, assembly drawings, technical orders and maintenance procedures concerning gasoline and diesel-powered buses and other equipment. Completes work orders with proper cost and time data. Other responsibilities include performing bus driver assignments on an occasional basis, as needed, performing necessary tests, including road tests, to ensure that repairs made are adequate, and serving as a member of the Transportation Team of the District; performing related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Required qualifications include high school graduation or equivalent and five (5) years of experience or technical training in functions such as inspection, repair, or maintenance of medium and heavy-duty equipment. Preferred qualifications include completion of basic, general purpose, vehicle repair course. The condition of employment includes criminal background clearance, work scheduled hours on a consistent basis, valid Washington State Drivers Licenses and CDL with appropriate school bus endorsements, and FMCSA drug and alcohol testing program.

Knowledge of shop safety requirements and bus maintenance is required. Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of technology and willingness and ability to increase knowledge to proficiency, set work priorities and meet deadlines, practice effective safety and security within individual work routines, maintain ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirement of confidentiality, follow written and verbal directions with minimal supervision, speak, read and follow written communications in English, exercise judgment as to when to act independently and when to refer to higher authority, and continue professional growth is also required. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

Physical demands include frequently standing, walking, bending/stoop, twisting, squatting/kneeling, talking/hearing, sitting, climbing 3-4 stairs into a bus and up to a 6 ft ladder, and using foot controls for operating various vehicles including 84 passenger size buses. Vision is in constant use in the position. Frequent use a computer screen and keyboard. The lift/carry requirements for this position include: constantly lift/carry up to 10 lbs; frequently 11-20 lbs; and occasionally 21-50 lbs. This position seldom lifts/carries 50-100 lbs and should be done as a two-person lift.

The work environment includes working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather, inflexible deadlines, frequent interruptions, exposure to hazardous chemicals, high noise level, and exposure to angry, frustrated, or aggressive individuals. This position is subject to alternation shifts.

Position reports to and evaluated by Executive Director of Transportation or designee. May also be required to take instructions from Lead Mechanic. Level of compensation is Level 06: Transportation on the PSE Salary Schedule.
