Please visit the links below to learn more information about GWC: Mission, Vision and Values GWC Strategic Plan 2025-2029 GWC Employee-Student Demographics Student Equity and Achievement Program Summary Under general supervision, provides instructional assistance and support tasks to students in the Biological Science and Chemistry classes in accordance with assignments and directions from a course instructor or other academic personnel; provides technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff in the use of technology in instructional programs; monitors and reports student progress; maintains Biological Science and Chemistry lab operations; provides instructional support for the students enrolled in Biological Science and Chemistry classes/labs requiring technical competence in basic math, general biology, chemistry, use of instructional equipment and software, and basic academic skills. Additionally, this position supports Biological Science dual enrollment courses offered at high school partner sites, including the preparation, coordination, and delivery of instructional materials, laboratory supplies, and equipment. This may include regular or weekly travel to partner sites to deliver and retrieve materials and supplies necessary to support laboratory instruction. Distinguishing Career Features Positions assigned to the class of Instructional Associate perform duties to assist and support the classroom instructor or other academic personnel, in a tutorial program, classroom, lab, or office setting. Classification in the instructional associate area requires individual emphasis, based on the instructional assignment. Each specialized emphasis constitutes a separate classification. Specific tasks may vary depending upon the subject area and discipline to which assigned. Work is performed within a framework of established procedures which may not require the physical presence of the instructor or other academic personnel. Positions in this class may exist in any of the instructional departments or divisions. Incumbents in the class of Instructional Associate are expected to have completed a minimum of two years of college with a major in the subject area to which their position is assigned. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assists instructional staff with the instruction, demonstration, and presentation of course assignments and materials for groups of students in the Biological Science and Chemistry courses. Assists in the preparation of instructional activities. Assists students with assignments, course content, and study skills; evaluates student work and coordinates appropriate tutorial sessions and supplemental instruction as needed. Assists in the coordination, operation, and maintenance of the science laboratory set up, including preparation of solutions, dispensing chemicals, preparing specimens, setting up equipment, and disposing of chemicals and specimens. Sets up and maintains specialized instruments and equipment and presents information in a logical, accurate and interesting manner to students. Orients students and new faculty on the procedures used and technology available to facilitate learning Monitors and records student progress and attendance; prepares and maintains related records and reports; evaluates student needs; confers with instructors regarding student progress. Recommends appropriate instructional materials and technology to be used by students; maintains and tests instructional materials and technology to ensure instructional methods and course content is current, accurate, and relevant in accordance with instructor’s curriculum guidelines. Demonstrates or describes the proper operation of equipment, instruments and supplies used in lab work. Assists students with technical difficulties regarding assignments. Responds to student questions and provides information regarding subject matter. Researches and troubleshoots technical problems when students, staff, and faculty have difficulty with the instructional equipment, course management systems, or log-on procedures. Assists in recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising student assistants. Assists instructors in preparation of manuals, handouts, and training/teaching materials. Demonstrates and enforces proper health and safety procedures and regulations in the laboratories and ensures that students are aware of such regulations. Performs general clerical functions critical to the maintenance and efficiency of the laboratories. Participates in development of the budget and monitors expenditures. Performs minor repairs and adjustments to laboratory equipment, such as microscopes; and arranges for necessary repairs of other equipment. Oversees schedule and training of students and maintains hourly employee records. Maintains accurate records. Consults with vendors regarding supplies, materials and equipment as needed. Monitors inventory and orders materials and equipment needed to maintain office, lab, and/or classroom. Participates in department meetings with instructional staff to exchange information, provide periodic reports and to remain current in instructional support techniques and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics Knowledge and Skills Basic math, general biology and chemistry at the community college level. Supplies and equipment of life science and chemistry laboratories and record keeping consistent with inventory control. Proper laboratory techniques for preparation and storage of solutions. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures as directed by District Health and Safety Officers. Instructional and tutorial methods and techniques. Student guidance principles and practices. Community college curriculum and educational requirements. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Computer assisted instruction, word processing software, and network applications. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Tools, techniques, equipment, basic study skills, and applicable technology used in the Biological Sciences/Chemistry laboratory. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and consideration Abilities Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position. Requires the ability to give general instruction support, providing tutoring and assistance in assigned subject matter for adult students of diverse backgrounds, abilities and skill levels. Properly set up, operate and demonstrate the correct operation/handling of materials and equipment used in biology and chemistry laboratories. Work with biological sciences and chemistry chemicals, specimens, and related equipment. Perform basic math, chemistry calculations, and college level work in assigned academics. Maintain chemicals and dispose of waste according to procedures specified by District Health and Safety. Lead the work of student assistants and maintain hourly employee records. Maintain an inventory on a computer in compliance with the Office of Health and Safety. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Provide effective instruction and assistance to students enrolled in the biology and chemistry classes. Present and demonstrate instructional materials and tutor in at least one subject area. Assess student achievement and encourage student participation. Troubleshoot and maintain instructional materials and technology. Respond to questions and assist students as needed. Maintain accurate records. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Plan, organize, and schedule a variety of work and activities. Oversee the work of others. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Recommend appropriate instructional materials and resources. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Perform basic clerical duties and work with statistical data. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic and disability backgrounds. Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, D.E.I.A Completion of two years of college with major course work in chemistry or biology or the equivalent (must include organic chemistry and general biology classes). Two years’ experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or in a similar position. Or, any combination of experience and training which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position. AND Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom and campus. Licenses and Certificates Some positions in this classification may require a valid California driver license and/or possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited college or agency relative to the assigned area. Continuing education, training or certification may be required. Working Conditions Incumbent must be able to meet and perform the physical requirements of the position which may include sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time.
