Overview The Lead Registered Respiratory Therapist assists the Supervisor with day‑to‑day operations of the Respiratory Care Department, performs standard and advanced respiratory care procedures, and serves as a technical resource for patients and staff. Responsibilities Perform routine respiratory therapy procedures including IPPB, O2 therapy, and humidity/aerosol therapy on patients in an assigned area. Coordinate department operations—scheduling, patient assignments, monitoring activities, and collaboration with other departments—to ensure effective patient care. Establish and maintain ventilation and airway care for assigned patients; provide ventilatory support during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Perform advanced respiratory care techniques such as invasive pressure monitoring (ICP), pulmonary artery catheter placement, cardiac output determinations, administration of nitric oxide, and other gases. Assist physicians with catheter insertion as needed. Collect arterial blood gases through line draws or punctures. Conduct patient assessment and reassessment through observation, clinical data gathering, and response to therapy; report findings and make referrals to appropriate disciplines. Provide educational development through guidance and teaching; serve as a technical resource for patients, families, physicians, students, and other hospital staff. Identify and respond to environmental safety factors; perform preventive maintenance on respiratory care equipment. Participate in departmental and hospital continuous improvement initiatives. Perform other job functions as assigned or requested. Education and Formal Training Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy (Required) Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy (Preferred) Technical Degree or Diploma in Respiratory Therapy (Preferred) Work Experience Critical Care experience of 1–3 years (Required) Licenses and Certifications Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (Required) Registered Respiratory Therapist – National (Required) Registered Respiratory Therapist – National Board for Respiratory Care (Required) Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification – American Heart Association (Preferred) Registered Respiratory Therapist – Mississippi – Mississippi State Department of Health (Preferred) Registered Respiratory Therapist – Tennessee – Tennessee Board of Respiratory Care (Preferred) Pediatric Advanced Life Support – American Heart Association (Preferred) Registered Respiratory Therapist – Arkansas – Arkansas State Medical Board (Preferred) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials such as patient records. Ability to communicate verbally with associates, physicians, and other professionals. Work independently without close supervision and exercise independent judgment. Organize multiple tasks and projects while maintaining workflow control. Completed competency and skill in intubation and airway management. Prepared to work with age‑specific populations (preferred). Physical Demands Climbing, pushing, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion are required. Good balance and coordination are essential. The job may require exerting up to 50lbs of force occasionally or up to 25lbs frequently. Close visual acuity, including color, depth perception, and field of vision, is necessary for tasks such as assessment and data analysis. The role involves frequent invasive and non‑invasive patient contact, exposure to patient body fluids, hazardous or poisonous materials, and requires quick reaction to emergency situations.
