Maintenance Worker

This position is a part-time (unbenefited) role with the Public Works Division of the City of Artesia, CA. The salary is $29.22 per hour, and the work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 5:30 am to 10:30 am.

The position involves a variety of maintenance, groundkeeping, and construction tasks in the City. Essential duties include repairing and maintaining physical structures, cleaning and keeping buildings in good repair, performing minor painting, plumbing, and carpentry tasks, maintaining grounds and areas along street right-of-ways, inspecting streets, alleys, and sidewalks, and performing other duties as assigned relating to maintenance and repair of City facilities.

Qualifications include a high school education or equivalent, two years of semi-skilled to skilled experience in maintenance, general construction, and/or custodial work, and a valid California Driver's License. Essential skills and knowledge include safe driving practices, basic knowledge of carpentry, electricity, and plumbing, and basic knowledge of lawn care and tree trimming. Essential mental/physical functions include maintaining stamina over time, managing time pressure and deadlines, and performing physical activities such as bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, walking, squatting, and getting in and out of vehicles without assistance.

Pre-employment requirements include a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting. The position has a 365-day probationary period. The examination process may include screening of training, background, and experience; scored evaluation of responses on a supplemental application; written examination(s); qualifications appraisal oral examination; performance examination; or technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis. Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process.
