ASC OR Charge Registered Nurse - MPO Ambulatory Surgery Center (Bellaire)

At Houston Methodist, the ASC OR Charge Registered Nurse (RN) position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. The ASC OR Charge RN is responsible for providing professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintaining medical records to achieve optimal patient outcomes while optimizing available resources, including surgical case management and perioperative patient care coordination. The ASC OR Charge RN provides direct patient care effectively and efficiently, may include patients with varied and complex needs, communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team, and demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies. The role assumes leadership responsibilities, including making assignments, coordinating flow, and leading shared governance initiatives. FLSA Status Non-exempt Qualifications Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credentials indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Experience Two years nursing experience in an operating room environment. Previous charge nurse experience preferred. Licenses and Certifications Required Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Texas; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (American Heart Association). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (American Heart Association). Certified Operating Room Nurse (CNOR) certification (CCI). Essential Functions People Essential Functions Leads daily huddles and utilizes daily management system techniques to drive unit-based improvements, makes daily staff assignments, and provides relief for breaks and lunches. Assigns preceptors and new orientees according to the needs of the department and the learner. Maintains cooperative relationships among health care teams by communicating information, responding to requests, building rapport, and participating in team problem-solving methods. Seeks guidance from and offers guidance to the interprofessional health care team, when appropriate, and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes. Implements staff education specific to patient populations and department processes, coaches and mentors other staff and students, and may include preceptorship. Uses peer-to-peer accountability toward improvement of department score for employee engagement. Service Essential Functions Leads the patient and family‑centered care standards, as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Follows the standards of care related to the nursing process. Conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and documents/maintains medical records. Develops, updates, and communicates a plan of care, including discharge, in partnership with the patient, family, and interprofessional health care team, using the nursing process. Prioritizes care based on the patient’s needs, abilities, and preferences. Advocates on the patient/family’s behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns, utilizing appropriate resources. Provides physical, emotional, and psychological support to patients, friends, and families. Provides patient teaching based on learning needs, uses appropriate resources, incorporates planning for care after discharge, and consistently evaluates the patient’s comprehension and adapts teaching methods accordingly. Helps drive improvement of department score for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability to service standards. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Follows the standards related to regulatory requirements and professional practice as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Identifies areas of practice improvements with research-based evidence to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes, supported by accurate documentation. Provides and modifies care to complex patients, coordinates care with the interprofessional team based on evaluation of the patient’s condition, supported by accurate documentation. Utilizes clinical judgement, using an evidence-based analytical approach. Monitors compliance with daily QA tasks and safety checks.
