Job Description

The Chemist II plans and executes laboratory experiments using established procedures and a strong technical understanding of analytical techniques. This role independently generates precise, reliable, and reproducible data in a timely manner, ensuring all work is documented in full compliance with regulatory requirements and GxP standards. The Chemist II interprets complex data, develops protocols for less defined assays, and presents experimental findings to broader scientific and cross-functional audiences while maintaining a strong focus on laboratory safety and quality.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute assigned laboratory tasks using standard procedures and sound technical judgment across a range of analytical techniques.

• Independently generate precise, reliable, and reproducible experimental data within required timelines.

• Document all experimentation and results in accordance with regulatory, GxP, GMP, and GLP requirements.

• Demonstrate strong experimental precision and robust data interpretation skills within the core discipline of chemistry and related sciences.

• Develop protocols and methodologies for more complex tests or experiments, particularly for assays and parameters that are less well defined.

• Ensure all laboratory activities comply with safety requirements, GxP standards, and internal quality procedures.

• Deliver high-quality, GxP-compliant data in a timely manner to support project and organizational objectives.

• Use basic computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and instrument-related software systems to record and analyze data.

• Operate and maintain analytical instruments including HPLC, GC, LC/MS, UV/VIS, MS, ICP, and chromatography data systems.

• Utilize chromatography data systems such as Empower, OpenLab, and Chromeleon to collect, process, and report analytical data.

• Present experimental findings and data summaries to larger groups, including scientific and cross-functional teams.

• Communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues and stakeholders regarding experimental plans, results, and conclusions.

• Apply a strong foundation in chemistry fundamentals to design experiments, troubleshoot methods, and interpret results.

• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in laboratory practices, documentation quality, and data integrity.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Medical Technology, Biology, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry, or a master’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry.

• Solid hands-on experience with analytical instruments including HPLC, GC, UV/VIS, MS, ICP, and LC/MS.

• Experience using chromatography data systems such as Empower, OpenLab, and Chromeleon.

• Demonstrated laboratory research experience in academic and/or industry settings with a proven track record of presentations and/or publications.

• Strong experience in chemistry fundamentals and core analytical principles.

• Familiarity with GMP and GLP requirements and an understanding of working in a regulated environment.

• Strong documentation skills with the ability to produce clear, complete, and compliant records of experiments and results.

• Ability to present experimental findings confidently to larger groups and scientific audiences.

• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to explain complex data and experimental outcomes.

• Ability to apply basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and instrument-related software systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Research presentations and publications in scientific journals or conferences are preferred but not required.

• Experienced and strong working knowledge of analytical instruments with demonstrated advanced laboratory skills.

• Excellent documentation skills with prior GMP and GLP experience are highly desirable.

• Experience presenting findings to scientific organizations or professional societies is a plus.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of North Chicago, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
