Hardware Research and Development Engineer

Position Overview We are searching for a motivated and talented mid‑level Hardware Engineer to join our Applied Signals & Systems Integration (ASSI) Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. The role focuses on sensor systems and spans signal processing, machine learning, and algorithm design. Responsibilities Provide hands‑on leadership of project teams. Technical management and leadership of research and development tasks. Mentor entry‑level engineers in sound engineering practices. Active role in the entire sensor development process—from specification to design to testing. Participate in specification of system requirements and hardware/software architecture design. Design analog and digital electronic circuits and circuit boards. Assist in the development of new projects and proposals. Collaborate with engineers across ARL to deliver complex sensor systems. Required Qualifications Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or related field). 5+ years of relevant experience for Advanced Professional level; 2+ years for Intermediate Professional level. Experience with automated testing, measurement, hardware calibration, and integration. Programming in MATLAB, LabVIEW, C/C++, or Python. Mixed‑signal design, including analog‑to‑digital converters and analog front‑end. Familiarity with circuit modeling and simulation. Knowledge of LINUX and Windows OS. Experience with embedded systems (FPGA, microcontrollers, etc.). Eligibility to obtain a government security clearance at the Secret level or higher. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering. Experience with Altium Designer for schematic entry and PCB layout. Design of DC‑DC converters, AC motor drives, and control algorithms. Proficiency in SolidWorks. Experience with modeling, simulation, software development, mechanical and power system design, and testing of sensor systems. Location & Travel On‑site at Penn State State College, PA. Periodic travel may be required for program meetings and field testing. Salary & Benefits The salary range for this position is $105,900.00 – $200,808.00.
