Our RootsThe Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the Numu (Northern Paiute), Newe (Western Shoshone), and Washeshu (Washoe). These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival.Each group's name means "The People" in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region.Today, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony continues to honor these traditions while supporting the well-being, culture, and future of its tribal community.Controller OverviewThe Controller provides day-to-day leadership for general ledger operations and ensures accurate, timely financial reporting that supports sound decision-making. Reporting to the CFO, you will guide financial planning practices and strengthen controls across budgeting, forecasting, reconciliation, and compliance.Key responsibilities include directing and reviewing statistical, budgetary, and accounting information; partnering with the CFO on short- and long-term financial policies and implementation; preparing budgets/forecasts; producing periodic reports aligned with RSIC and statutory requirements; overseeing capital expenditure approvals and budget compliance; ensuring monthly balance sheet reconciliations and adjustments; maintaining the chart of accounts and cost codes; and managing hiring, performance, and scheduling.Required qualifications:- Bachelor's in Accounting or Finance- 5+ years public accounting experience (3+ years supervising)- Strong GASB/GAAP knowledge and solid communication skills- Ability to coach staff and prepare complex, accurate reports- Availability for occasional evening meetings in Reno and/or Hungry ValleyApply to bring your expertise to a mission-driven Controller role.Benefits SnapshotHealth coverage options include Medical (Hometown Health PPO), Dental (Lincoln), and Vision (Lincoln), with RSIC paying 100% of Employee Only premiums and contributing toward Employee & Spouse/Child(ren)/Family tiers (tier contributions vary).Additional support includes:- Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance: $50,000 policy paid by RSIC (reduces to $25,000 after age 70)- Optional purchasable coverages: AFLAC and LegalShield (see HR Benefit Coordinator for details)- Paid Time Off: Annual Leave accrues 4 hours per pay period (increases after 5 years; usable after probation)- Sick Leave: accrues 4 hours per pay period, available immediately- Paid Holidays: 13 per calendar year- 401(k): discretionary RSIC contribution; employee contributions after 60 days; employer match begins after 1 yearA Typical DayOnsite in Reno, your day starts by scanning the latest financial activity and checking in with general ledger staff to confirm priorities and timelines. You'll spend focused blocks reviewing reconciliations and draft reports, then shift to collaborative working sessions with the CFO to align upcoming forecasts and policy updates.Midday often brings quick problem-solving-answering internal questions, clarifying coding, or resolving items that could affect month-end accuracy. Later, you'll refine materials for leadership review, ensuring numbers are clear, defensible, and ready for distribution. Some weeks include preparing for evening meetings when requested, with time set aside to organize talking points and supporting schedules before you wrap up.Please Note: Hiring preference is provided to qualified members of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony followed by members of other federally recognized tribes.
