Summary This is an open-continuous announcement with an established initial cut-off date of 11/02/2025. The position is designated as an Essential Position, meaning it cannot be vacated during war or national emergencies without seriously impairing the mission. Assignments may be performed at any job site within the organization. Duties & Responsibilities Perform law enforcement and crime prevention duties to maintain law and order during normal and emergency operations, protecting the life, property, and civil rights of individuals. Patrol DLA installations and property, prevent crime, enforce local regulations and laws, and conduct initial investigations of suspicious activities, security breaches, and crimes. Advise suspects of their Miranda rights prior to questioning, write incident and activity reports, detain suspects, secure and process crime scenes, and conduct preliminary investigations. Act as first responder to emergencies or volatile situations such as terrorist attacks, hostage situations, bomb threats, vehicle accidents, robberies, hazardous material incidents, and other emergencies. Operate fixed posts located within DLA installations or at perimeter gates and control access to sensitive/restricted areas where there may be a breach of security, public safety, or public health. Inspect outgoing personnel, packages, and vehicles at gates and checkpoints to detect, detain, or cite possible property theft. Provide specialized pedestrian and traffic control services for ceremonies, parades, emergencies, and similar events. Perform traffic duties including directing traffic, issuing tickets or notices for vehicle operation, and handling parking violations. Coordinate emergency responses between security, fire, and other emergency units, and react to calls concerning violations or complaints, including 911/100 emergency calls. Requirements U.S. citizen. Rotating shifts. Security clearance: Non-Critical Sensitive with Secret Access. Appointment is subject to a favorable suitability or fitness determination; unfavorably adjudicated background checks are grounds for removal. Non-Exempt FLSA status. Male applicants born after 12/31/59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service. No recruiting incentives. Union status: Yes. Preemployment physical requirement: Physical fitness testing required at specified DLA sites (New Cumberland, PA; Richmond, VA; Ft Belvoir, VA; Columbus, OH; Tracy, CA). Travel is the candidate’s expense. Valid state driver’s license. This is a Mission Essential position; the incumbent may be required to report to work during natural disasters, inclement weather, or crises. Qualifications To qualify as a Police Officer, your resume and supporting documentation must support: One year of specialized experience directly related to this position, meeting GS‑05 equivalency for a GS‑06 level. Experience and knowledge of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, and maintaining order. Basic investigative methods and techniques to investigate violations or probable incidents. Experience may be paid, unpaid, or volunteer work through programs such as Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and other community organizations. All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will receive credit. Training The DLA Police program provides consistent, high‑quality training. Officers receive training through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA, and the Army Civilian Police Academy at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Recruit officers begin training immediately with full pay and benefits. Physical Demands The role requires extended physical exertion: running, walking, standing, bending, driving, and occasionally lifting, pushing, or carrying items weighing 50 pounds or more. Physical agility, stamina, and strength are required for pursuit, apprehension, or detainment. Heavy weights of up to 150 pounds may be pulled or dragged. Annual physical fitness tests and training in defensive tactics, active shooter/hostage response, handcuffing, and firearms qualifications are required. Work Environment Work occurs in variable weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold, high noise levels, and high-force protection environments. Risks include moderate to high potential for danger or serious injury. Personal protective equipment—vests, coats, gloves, boots, goggles, masks, shields—is used at times. Facilities may be limited in some locations. Education Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
