About Skilled US:
The Skilled US EMS Educator understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of Emergency Medical Services and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the subject matter meaningful and accessible to high school scholars. Working within the Skilled US Indiana high school pathway, the Educator designs and delivers engaging, age-appropriate, hands-on instruction that prepares adolescent learners for industry-recognized credentials, work-based learning, and careers in pre-hospital emergency care. This is a part-time, high-school-facing role serving scholars 3 to 5 days per week, 3 to 4 hours per day, in the classroom, skills lab, and approved clinical or field settings. Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Provides EMS instruction to high school scholars and other Skilled US learners, adapting content, pace, and delivery to adolescent learning styles.
- Designs and delivers engaging, standards-aligned lessons across classroom, skills-lab, clinical, and field settings appropriate for minors.
- Prepares scholars for industry-recognized EMS certifications and clearly defined next-step career and education pathways.
- Writes evaluation instruments and administers assessments for outcomes, competency, and mastery of content.
- Works, interacts, and assists other EMS Educators and Skilled US staff as a team to provide and assure ongoing quality of instruction and programming.
- Provides information, guidance, encouragement, and mentorship to participating scholars.
- Organizes, schedules, and conducts educational experiences in the classroom, skills lab, clinical, and field settings.
- Coordinates and supervises hands-on skills practice and work-based learning while maintaining a safe, supportive environment for minors.
- Monitors program activities, tracks scholar attendance, maintains accurate records, and submits required reports on time.
- Communicates with scholars, families, staff members, providers, and the public in a professional, positive manner.
- Participates in self-assessment, peer mentoring, peer review programs, and continuing education activities.
- Participates in CQI programs, evaluation processes, and instructional-improvement efforts in emergency care education.
- Serves as a member of Skilled US, school, community, or professional committees designed to improve, promote, or coordinate emergency medical services and CTE at the local, regional, or state level.
- Participates in and/or conducts departmental and instructional meetings.
- Maintains the cleanliness of equipment, keeps equipment organized, and is accountable for all equipment utilized.
- Coordinates and participates in clinical and field experiences as required and as permitted for high school scholars.
- Performs in the pre-hospital setting at the level of the Educator’s own EMS certification.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Licensure/Certification (at least one): Indiana Paramedic License (preferred), Indiana Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Certification, or Registered Nurse. Candidates who do not hold a Paramedic license and are offered the position must be able to enter the next available Paramedic course, with successful completion and certification within one year of hire.
- A minimum of five years of clinical experience as a pre-hospital provider is required; five years as a Paramedic in a clinical environment is preferred.
- Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License — must meet and remain in compliance with the applicable driver-eligibility policy.
- Certification in all of the following: ACLS, AHA CPR, PEPP, EVOC, and NAEMT provider in two disciplines.
- Instructor-level certification in all of the following: CPR, ACLS, PEPP, and two NAEMT disciplines. Candidates who do not hold all required instructor certifications must be able to enter the next available appropriate instructor course, with successful completion and certification within one year of hire.
- Primary Instructor certification. Candidates who do not hold a Primary Instructor certification must be able to enter the next available national or state-authorized certification instructor course, with successful completion and certification within one year of hire.
- NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800.
- AWR 111 and 160 preferred.
- Indiana EMS Commission EVOC Instructor preferred.
- Prior teaching experience preferred; experience working with high school or adolescent learners strongly preferred.
- Must satisfactorily complete all background checks, screenings, and training required to work with minors in an educational setting.
- Knowledge of basic and advanced life support equipment used in pre-hospital emergency medical care.
- Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations governing the provision, operation, and educational requirements of basic and advanced life support services and personnel.
- Knowledge of state and federal curricula related to all levels of pre-hospital emergency care providers.
- Demonstrated ability to adjust teaching techniques and present materials for learners of different ages and learning styles, with particular skill in engaging adolescent (high school) learners.
- Ability to execute responsibilities related to course planning, instruction, evaluation, and coordination of EMS programs.
- Ability to use and/or develop instructional aids including audio-visual equipment, training mannequins, curriculum materials, and student handout materials.
- Excellent verbal and nonverbal communication skills; self-motivated and dependable.
- Ability to manage daily class activities, the learning environment, course paperwork, and student records, and to conduct educational opportunities in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the life span, with the ability to assess and interpret information needed to identify each learner’s and patient’s age-specific needs.
- PowerPoint and other presentation software, databases, spreadsheets, and test-generator programs, and to build learning modules for classroom and virtual delivery.
- Understands and uses formative and summative strategies, with both formal and informal techniques, to evaluate and ensure the continuous cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development of the learner.
- Maintains scholar, patient, and family confidentiality.
- Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and applicable student-privacy (FERPA) regulations.
- Curriculum Development - curriculum revision and slides updates, creating scenarios, etc.
- The Educator may work independently under the general direction of the Executive Regional Director.
- Frequently meets with scholars, families, staff, providers, and the public. Such contacts are initiated to exchange information, explain programs, provide instruction, and coordinate training activities.
- Primary locations: office/classroom setting, skills laboratory, clinical sites, and field sites. Instructional facilities may include patient-care areas, clinics, classrooms, and field settings.
- Educators may be required to attend meetings or perform work from remote offices.
- Vocational hazards of field activities may include traffic and inclement weather, violent or unsafe emergency scenes, and hazardous-material or Weapons of Mass Destruction environments while participating in experiential educational activities.
- Use of basic and advanced life support equipment used in pre-hospital emergency medical care.
