Part-time Custodian Position

There are 2 openings for the Part-time Custodian position: Position 1: Monday - Friday (6:00pm - 10:00pm) 20 hours per week OR Position 2: Saturday (9:00am - 6:00pm); Sunday (10:00am - 7:00pm) 16 hours per week. Performs standard, interior and exterior janitorial/minor maintenance duties involving cleaning and disinfecting City facilities and public domains and performs lawn attendance and other grounds keeping duties, including snow removal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

• Perform interior custodial duties involving mopping, dusting and vacuuming.
• Use mechanical floor cleaners to polish, buff, strip and wax floors, and vacuum and shampoo carpets.
• Perform exterior custodial/maintenance duties including snow removal and picking up litter.
• Remove waste and soiled linens from work area and gathers and disposes of trash and waste, some which may contain hazardous materials.
• Cleans and disinfects all fixtures, floors, mirrors, windows, doors and walls, including those in kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, locker rooms, and weight rooms.
• Restock supplies.
• Moves, removes and relocates furniture, furnishings, equipment, etc., as directed.
• Order supplies and equipment repairs, as authorized by supervisor.
• Observe all common safety practices.
• May perform minor maintenance repair such as unstopping toilets and sinks, and replacing burned out light bulbs.
• May patch and paint walls.
• May operate scissor lift.
• May assist in training and checking the work of other employees.
• Ability to read and interpret chemical instructions and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Qualifications and Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Graduation from high school or a GED certificate, preferred. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: None. LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Must have valid Class R Driver's License CPR or attainable within 90 days from date of hire First Aid or attainable within 90 days from date of hire AED or attainable within 90 days from date of hire DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Level of Supervision: May perform lead work on a job-by-job or rotating basis. Guidance and Decision Making: Guidelines are in the form of stated objectives for the function. Work assignments are generally unstructured and responsible for assigning and supervising a variety of functions to achieve the objectives. The position is responsible for coordinating and supervising several tasks in which several phases may be in progress at once. Work may be discussed with higher-level management and reviewed for soundness of judgment and feasibility of decisions. COMPETENCIES: Vision: Ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more, 20 inches or less, judge distance and space relations, see peripherally and distinguish and identify different colors. Reasoning: Identifies rules, principles or relationships that explain facts, data or other information, analyzes information and makes correct inferences or draws accurate conclusions. Knowledge of: Safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe work environment for self and others. Cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment sufficient to be able to effectively clean City facilities. Lifting techniques. Skill in: Understanding and following oral, illustrated, written or demonstrated instructions. Using chemicals and materials used to clean and disinfect. Communicating and presenting factual information related to the work assignment. Physical Demands: Balancing: maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling over. Carrying: transporting an object, usually by hand, arm, or shoulder. Climbing: ascending or descending objects usually with hands/feet. Crouching: bending body downward and forward by bending legs. Eye/hand/ foot coordination: performing work through using two or more at one time. Fingering: picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers. Handling: seizing, holding, grasping, or otherwise working with hands. Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by the ear. Kneeling: bending legs to come to rest on one or both knees. Lifting: raising or lowering an object from one level to another. Pulling: exerting force on an object so that it is moving to the person. Pushing: exerting force upon an object so that the object is away. Reaching: extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. Repetitive motions: making frequent movements with a part of the body. Standing: remaining on one's feet in an upright position. Stooping: bending the body by bending spine at the waist. Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Walking: moving about on foot. PHYSICAL STRENGTH: Lifting: raising or lowering an object 25-50 pounds. ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Atmospheric Conditions: conditions that affection the skin or respiratory system. Exposed to: hazards from elector/mechanical/power equipment. housekeeping/cleaning agents/chemicals. odors in kitchen and/or other areas. toxic chemicals. Hazards: conditions where there is danger to life, body, and/or health. Temperature Changes: variations in temperature from hot to cold. Wet: frequent contact with water or other liquid.
