Position Overview The Ellis County Sheriff's Office is hiring a Detention Officer. The role is full‑time and located at 300 S. Jackson St., Waxahachie, TX 75165. Salary and Compensation Annual Salary: Step 1 – $57,985.00 Step Pay Scale: Step 2 – $60,217.00, Step 3 – $62,535.00, Step 4 – $64,943.00, Step 5 – $67,443.00, Step 6 – $70,040.00 Hourly Equivalent: $27.88 Additional Pay: $45 per month Certification Pay (up to $135.00) Benefits Medical and Dental Insurance Paid Vacation and Holidays Personal Day and Sick Leave Plan Longevity Pay TCDRS Retirement Core Responsibilities Conduct routine searches of inmates and their property Perform administrative tasks including report writing and record‑keeping, computer access required Monitor inmate behavior in housing units, during escort or transportation Maintain security of internal and external doors and elevators Participate in life‑safety drills and respond in emergency situations Assist with feeding, laundry, recreation, religious services, visitation, and related functions Recognize potential exposure to communicable diseases Requirements Citizen of the United States of America At least 18 years of age at time of application Honorable discharge if prior military service GED or high school diploma Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; eligible for Texas driver’s license if not currently licensed by Texas 20/20 vision in each eye (corrected or uncorrected); uncorrected vision cannot fall below 20/100 unless corrected with lenses worn at all times during duty; no color or night blindness; eye surgery must be at least one year prior to employment Hearing loss not exceeding 30 dB with correction; uncorrected loss no greater than 60 dB Good character and favorable work and school history Successful completion of Detention Officer training and state certification required for employment No criminal record that would preclude hiring per TCOLE and Sheriff’s Office standards Criminal History: No convictions or probation for offenses that would preclude licensing by TCOLE No crimes of moral turpitude; no time limit on disqualification No indictments or pending trials for felony, Class A/B misdemeanor, or non‑traffic Class C misdemeanor No prohibition by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition No admission to sex crimes, hate crimes, or aggravated violence, even if undiscovered or uncharged No prior jail time for failure to pay child support unless proven wrongful Driving History: Conviction of failure to stop and render aid Conviction of driving with suspended license within last 10 years No suspended license within two years of application No more than three moving violations or chargeable accidents in prior two years, or no more than five in prior three years No prohibition by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle Disability Accommodation In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Sheriff’s Office will make every reasonable effort to accommodate your needs.
