Staff Accountant

Position Summary We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our accounting team in a fast-paced contingency fee law firm. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting the month-end close process, assisting with settlement accounting, and providing backup for day-to-day bookkeeping functions as needed. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in both transactional accounting and general ledger accounting and thrives in a high-volume environment. Responsibilities General Accounting Prepare and post journal entries. Perform monthly bank, trust (IOLTA), credit card, and balance sheet account reconciliations. Assist with month-end and year-end close. Maintain general ledger accounts and supporting schedules. Prepare financial reports and account analyses. Review financial transactions for accuracy and compliance with firm policies. Assist with budgeting, audits, and other accounting projects. Identify process improvements and strengthen internal controls. Settlement Accounting Assist with recording legal settlements and settlement-related transactions. Reconcile client cost recoveries, referral fee allocations, and settlement disbursements. Maintain accurate accounting records supporting settlement activity. Ensure compliance with trust accounting procedures and internal controls. Provide backup and overflow support for bookkeeping functions. Record accounts payable invoices and process vendor payments. Assist with accounts receivable and client payment postings. Prepare bank deposits and record cash receipts. Process credit card transactions and expense reimbursements. Assist with payroll entries and payroll reconciliations. Maintain vendor files and supporting documentation. Help manage daily accounting transactions during periods of high volume or staff absences. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred. Minimum 3 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience , preferably in a law firm or professional services environment. Experience with legal settlement accounting is a plus. Required Skills Proficiency in QuickBooks (Enterprise experience preferred). Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including:
