Job Title Police Officer I - 3340 Division Finance and Administration Department Police & Public Safety Primary Purpose of Position The role is to perform law enforcement duties around the UNC Pembroke campus, including proactive patrols, responding to calls for service, conducting investigations, completing incident reports, testifying in hearings, and participating in community engagement and crime prevention activities. The officer will enforce state laws and university policies, provide security for campus events, protect university assets, and work to enhance campus safety and quality of life. Responsibilities Respond to and investigate complaints and violations of the law, identifying witnesses and preserving evidence. Patrol university parking lots, streets, grounds and buildings to enforce laws and ensure safety. Enforce traffic laws and university parking ordinances, issuing citations or tickets as appropriate. Assist students, faculty, staff and visitors with information, facility access, and safety escorts. Provide first‑responder care to injured persons and coordinate ambulance, fire and rescue services. Maintain communication with local law‑enforcement agencies, emergency agencies and the public. Complete all necessary reports and documentation. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications High School diploma or GED (minimum for Police Officer I). For Police Officer Trainee, enrollment in a Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program. Probationary certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission for Police Officer I, or successful completion of BLET and certification for Trainee. Enrollment in or completion of a university-designated field training program for newly appointed campus police officers. Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license. Eligibility to provide a sign‑on bonus if not previously employed by North Carolina state government within the last 12 months. Capacity to work during adverse weather or emergency events under mandatory personnel requirements. Licenses & Certifications Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer from the NC Criminal Justice Education Training & Standards Commission. N.C. Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification. Background Check Applicants will undergo a criminal background check, employment verification, reference checks, license verification (if applicable), and credit history check (if applicable). All employees must verify identity and work eligibility in compliance with federal law.
