DPW Commissary To-Go Shift Lead

JOB SUMMARY The Department of Public Works (DPW) Commissary To-Go Shift Lead will assist in the construction, operation, and strike of the Commissary space for the Burning Man event production season. They will aid with assembling To-Go orders, working with the kitchen crew to ensure meals are ready for pick up in a timely manner, tracking & recording all To-Go meals digitally and through analog means, and will assist the rest of the crew when necessary. This is a temporary, ineligible for benefits role. Employment Dates & Location Duration: August - September 2026 Employment type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt Location: Black Rock City, Nevada DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Commissary To-Go Operations (90%) Assist with opening, closing, and daily operations of meal shifts, including cleaning tables and maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards. Attend required meal shifts (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) and take To-Go orders over the radio. Process To-Go Meal orders via radio, place correct orders, and ensure meals are picked up by appropriate departments. Review and comply with Commissary policies and guidelines, enforce dress code, maintain conduct, health and safety practices, and meet meal-pass requirements. Coordinate with the TSA team for trash and recycling removal. Coordinate with the meal vendor team for smooth, timely operation of the Commissary To-Go space. Communicate and coordinate with Commissary Management to ensure operations run smoothly and challenges are addressed promptly. Create and maintain a respectful, friendly, and comfortable environment for service provision. Other Functions and Responsibilities (10%) Assist in tent construction and strike pre/post-event. Support LNT and waste disposal plans. Implement and support changing safety protocols as directed. Be familiar with and adhere to Burning Man staff policies, protocols, and behavioral standards. Monitor personal well-being, set boundaries, maintain self-care, and address concerns with management. Perform other duties as assigned. LEARNING AND TEACHING Assist in creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation. Help acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes. Pursue ongoing learning to stay current on emerging knowledge, skills, and processes. QUALIFICATIONS Required Experienced and comfortable with using two-way radios or willing to learn. Flexible and understanding attitude balancing needs of people and daily practices with care. Reliable, responsible, dependable, and fulfills obligations. Effectively manages own time and supports the team’s efforts. Knowledge of and willingness to practice cleaning and sanitation procedures in Commissary processes. Capable of working in an extreme environment with drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality, and low/no visibility. Able to temporarily relocate to Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada. Preferred Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and adhere to traffic laws. Prior experience at Burning Man or familiarity with its culture. Ability to lift 50+ lbs. Ability to handle positive interfacing with diverse personalities. COMPENSATION Hourly rate: $16.00 to $18.50 per hour (August – September 2026). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT Requires heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing; physically demanding. Work in outside weather conditions, possible exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and temperature extremes. May walk or use transportation to meet department representatives located outside the immediate area.
