ABOUT MOHS SURGERY

Mohs micrographic surgery is the gold standard for treating many skin cancers, boasting the highest cure rates of any surgical approach — up to 99% for appropriate cases. This specialized procedure involves the systematic removal and real-time microscopic examination of thin layers of tissue, allowing the surgeon to precisely map and confirm clear margins before closing the wound.

Because Mohs surgery is often an all-day procedure, patients and their families require extraordinary levels of communication, education, and emotional support. This is where you shine. Your role transforms what could be an anxiety-inducing experience into one where patients feel informed, empowered, and genuinely cared for.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SURGERY COORDINATOR

You are a problem solver and a critical thinker. You are analytical, detail-oriented (some may even refer to you as a perfectionist), and a “numbers-person.” You love working independently and being the rockstar behind the scenes. Most importantly, you are always up for a challenge and thrive in scenarios where goals have to be met!

• Schedule pre-operative consultations, pathology reviews, and postoperative follow-up appointments with precision and efficiency

• Conduct thorough pre-operative patient counseling sessions, clearly explaining the nature of Mohs surgery, the staged nature of the procedure, expected duration, and the possibility of same-day reconstruction

• Partner closely with the billing and insurance team to verify coverage, obtain prior authorizations and referral requirements, and confirm medical necessity documentation for Mohs procedures

• Educate patients on their insurance benefits as they relate to Mohs surgery, including deductibles, out-of-pocket costs, co-insurance, and potential facility fees

• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) system, including scheduling notes, patient communications, consent tracking, and insurance authorization records

• Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations in all patient communications, whether by phone, patient portal, or written correspondence

• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives by tracking scheduling metrics, patient satisfaction data, and coordination outcome.

• Other additional administrative or Billing tasks as needed.

Experience Required:

• At least 1-year of medical office experience (specifically, front office experience in collecting payments)

• At least 1-year of insurance experience
