The Trades Maintenance Specialist I leads, participates, or operates independently providing journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, trouble-shooting, construction, fabrication and preventive maintenance. This position is primarily responsible for carpentry-related tasks, including commercial framing, installation and repair of doors and windows, insulation, and drywall. This position requires technical skills, experience and knowledge in the area of specialization and is accountable for activities, ensuring services or products comply with written procedures, engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, industry standards and statutory codes and requirements.

Essential Functions:

• Performs skilled analysis, repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and vehicles;
• Leads fabrication and modifications of equipment, systems, and facilities based on verbal instructions, sketches, or technical drawings;
• Inspects, services, and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles;
• Conducts quality-control analysis on equipment and systems, implementing necessary corrective actions for optimal performance;
• Inspects, approves, or certifies the work of others, if certified or authorized;
• Maintains detailed records of activity, operations, service, and usage for equipment, vehicles, and systems;
• Prepares oral and written activity reports and estimates for complex operations, maintenance, and special projects;
• Prepares sketches and drawings to communicate work plans to supervisors, subordinates, and contractors;
• Coordinates activities with other units, agencies, or contractors to ensure efficient resource use and minimize disruptions;
• Monitors contractor performance, including goods and services provided;
• Conducts on-the-job training for employees in the assigned work-unit;
• Manages the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with safety protocols;
• Maintains security and accountability for all tools, equipment, and materials, especially in sensitive environments (e.g., medical, law enforcement, correctional settings);
• Ensures the use of safety and personal protective equipment and implements work-site traffic control procedures;
• Oversees the maintenance and care of turf grasses, trees, and ornamental shrubs, including pest control, fertilization, and addressing plant health issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Two years journey-level experience in cabinetry, carpentry, and structural steel.
• OR:
• Two years of experience with Pima County in a Trades Maintenance Apprentice or closely-related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Minimum three (3) years experience in commercial framing, drywall, doors, windows, and insulation.
• Experience with/knowledge of installation and repairs of millwork, countertops, hardware, and finish carpentry.
• Experience with reading and interpreting blueprint drawings.
• Experience with/knowledge of red iron steel framing and fabrication of small-scale projects such as awnings and shade structures.

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record. Some positions require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) at the time of appointment, or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period. Positions requiring a CDL are also subject to applicable State of Arizona and federal standards, rules, and regulations on physical requirements including drug and alcohol testing. Some positions require Arizona certification as an herbicide/pesticide applicator or backflow device inspector/repair person or installer, etc. at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period. Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice Items: The ability to obtain a jail pass is required. The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. Physical/Sensory Requirements: Some positions require the ability to: lift and carry up to seventy-five pounds; safely operate assigned vehicles and other powered equipment; work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, cold; safely wear required safety clothing/equipment; work in the presence of obnoxious odors; work with noxious or potentially hazardous chemicals, compounds or products; ascend and descend ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms and job sites; differentiate between colors. Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Action Activity - bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting, stooping; Motion Activity- Grasping, Hearing - In noisy areas, on a radio, behind themselves, equipment alarms; Speaking - In person, on the phone, on a radio, on a cell; Vision - operate motor vehicle, operate commercial vehicle, operate forklift/power industrial equipment, distinguish colors, have depth perception, have peripheral vision.
